COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
FROM THE CHAIR/CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Lisa Martin-Stuart
A Company of Players and Beyond
I was a shy kid. My grade school report cards would inform my
parents that while I was a good student, I was extremely shy and
reluctant to take part in any activity that involved speaking in
front of my classmates. So, imagine my parents’ surprise when
I announced that I had added Drama as a 9th grade elective course! At the
time, I was not even sure why I was drawn to this course; I only know that I was
intrigued by plays, even though I had never been to a live theatre production.
The idea of the characters speaking directly to me from the page was something
that sparked my imagination like nothing I had ever experienced or read before.
When I met my drama teacher, Ellen Darden, she invited me to volunteer at
the local community theatre on a play that she was in (Henry IV, Part I). When
I stepped into that theatre, I felt a sense of belonging and knew I had found a
community of artists that would be a part of me for the rest of my life. One
year later, I was part of a group of students that formed my high school’s first
Drama Club. I was cast in every play we did for the next three years and worked
as stage crew, scene painter, props maker, and, the role that would eventually
become my life’s work, costume designer.
As I have worked for the last four weeks with the cast and crew of Ajax in Iraq, I
am reminded of the wonderful feeling of being part of a company. Once again, I
am part of the excitement and satisfaction of being completely immersed in the
collaborative and creative process of bringing a playscript to life -- the unique
experience of creating an environment and characters that will physically live
for only the next two weeks, but will hopefully live in our memory for a lifetime.
The production will end and the company will change, but the experience of
creating this “special world” will stay with us forever.
I hope that you too will feel the excitement of this collaboration, because, as our
audience, you too have become part of the company and creative process of
live theatre. Enjoy and relish the experience of Ajax in Iraq, and please return to
be part of our next company of players.
Thank you, Mrs. Darden.

From the Classroom to the Stage
The production of Ajax in Iraq is a perfect example of an ensemble.
This committed and passionate group of Undergraduates offers
us the opportunity to watch, listen, think, feel, question, challenge,
empathize and change. It has allowed the Undergraduate
community to experience a passion and commitment that is
needed to perform such personal material with truthfulness and authenticity.
The play is an invitation to watch an ensemble unite in thought and in feeling.
Through their unrelenting pursuit of excellence, in both process and product,
this ensemble gives us an opportunity to participate in something that is graphic
and eloquent, visceral and articulate, provocative and potent.
Undergraduate theatre training has changed in many ways in our department.
We now offer conservatory-style performance courses under a liberal arts
umbrella, and accompany these courses with fully produced productions
where the students can utilize the practical skills they have learned in class.
Working on this production has proved a profound experience for these
students, one that they will remember in years to come. Each student has
grown and developed. Each student has shown commitment and tenacity.
Each student has been stretched in their physical and emotional strength to
create this piece.
We are proud of the work of each and everyone one of them.
