CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION is presented by special arrangement with
Dramatist’s Play Service, Inc., New York.
Playwrights Horizons, Inc., New York City, produced the World Premiere of
CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION Off-Broadway in 2009.
CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION was developed, in part, with the assistance of the Sundance Institute
Theatre Program, with additional support from the Sundance Institute’s Time Warner Storytelling Fellowship.
FROM THE DIRECTOR
Annie Baker calls her play “a strange little naturalistic meditation on
theater and life and death and the passing of time.” While working
on this piece, the cast and I explored the intersections of life and art.
We played all the games from the show, along with many of our own.
We made silly faces and sounds. We told each other secrets. And we
asked, “Why?” Why do grown-ups stop playing games? How can
performing enhance our lives in ways that other activities cannot?
What does it mean to truly connect with another human being?
I think this play demands a lot from actors and audience members
alike. Tonight, the characters, as well as the actors playing them, will
reflect upon their lives onstage. We ask that you take some time to
put away your virtual lives for a bit and reflect upon your lives with
us. I hope you enjoy the show -- feel free to laugh or cry or watch
yourself in the mirrors. Tonight, we celebrate theatre and life!
Many thanks to my incredible team, mentors, and family.
