onmouth enters tonight’s game with Liberty looking for its first win of the 2013 season after facing the number two team in the country
in national title contender Montana State last weekend. Like Monmouth, Liberty is also looking to break into the win column after losing
a seven point contest to FBS opponent Kent State last weekend. The Hawks will be going to the not-so-friendly confines of Williams stadium
where Liberty owns an impressive non-conference record.
The Hawks got off to a slow start against the Bobcats, whose quick strike offense put the game out of reach by halftime. The good news for
Monmouth was that new quarterback Brandon Hill settled in towards the end of the first half, leading the Hawks on a scoring drive. Monmouth
outscored the Bobcats by a 21-3 margin in the second half, with the defense getting a number of early stops while Hill moved the Hawks
down the field. Junior back Julian Hayes scored the first touchdown of the 2013 season from three yards out en route to his sixth 100-yard
rushing performance. Hill tossed TD passes to Eric Sumlin and Elijah Phillips while racking up 240 yards through the air. Defensively, eight
players saw their first action for the Hawks, while a total of 10 defensive players took their first snaps for the Hawks (including 4 starters).
Liberty kicked off its season with an FBS opponent in Kent State last weekend as it has in four of the last five seasons. The game was a
defensive battle in the first half with the Flames trailing 7-3 going into halftime but took the lead with 7:25 to play in the third quarter on a
Josh Woodrum to Gabe Henderson 11 yard TD. Kent State rallied to score 10 points in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead touchdown
with 4:28 to play. Woodrum completed 14-of-22 passes for 189 yards, with 106 yards going to sophomore Darren Peterson. UVA transfer
Clifton Richardson led the Flames on the ground with 12 runs for 45 yards. Liberty, Monmouth’s future Big South conference mate, is looking
for its third consecutive Big South title.

The Hawks will need to convert on third down to keep its young defense
off the field against a potentially grueling rushing attack. The Hawks were
just 2-of-10 last game. MU will also need to pressure pocket passer Josh
Woodrum, which means earning its first sack of the 2013 season.

INSIDE THE MU-LIBERTY SERIES

HAWKS TO JOIN BIG SOUTH IN 2014
In February of 2013 Monmouth University officially accepted a invitation
to join the Big South Conference as an associate member in the sport of football. With most of the Big South schedule already set, the Hawks were forced
to play an independent schedule for the first time since 1995. The Hawks will
get an early look at the Big South tonight when they face future conference
rival Liberty University under the lights at Williams Stadium. The Hawks
signed a four-year deal with the Big South and will compete for the league’s
auto bid to the FCS Playoffs with the Flames, Coastal Carolina, Charleston
Southern, Presbyterian and Gardner Webb.
HAYES’ 135 YARD GAME PUSHES HIM TO SIXTH IN RUSHING...
With his 135 yard game at Montana State last Thursday, junior running
back Julian Hayes jumped two spots to sixth on the Monmouth all-time career rushing yards list. Hayes, who now has rushed for 1,599 yards at MU,
passed former backs Bobby Smith and Bobby Giles with his performance
against the Bobcats. He now sits 352 yards behind Joe Migliore, who is 5th
all-time with 1,951 career yards, and is 641 yards shy of 2nd place all time.
The 135 yard outburst was Hayes’ sixth career 100+ yard rushing contest,
good for fourth all-time at MU in 100 yard games. Hayes was named a CFPA
honorable mention running back of the week for his Week 1 performance.
HILL’S CLIMB AS A STARTER
The Montana State game began the Brandon Hill era as the Hawks starting
quarterback. Over the 21 seasons of football, Monmouth has had 13 different starting quarterbacks (QBs which started a significant number of career
games), with only four earning wins in their first starts. Hill’s 240 yards ranks
second behind Dan Sabella’s 263 in 1994. He also joins Sabella as the only
quarterback to throw two touchdowns in his first contest. Hill did start for
UMass against Holy Cross in 2011, going five-of-eight for 30 yards with no
touchdowns and no interceptions.

MU VS LIBERTY • GAME 2
2013 FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
NEW FACES TAKE THE FIELD FOR THE HAWKS
In last week’s game 16 players took the field for the first time for the Hawks.
Guard Reece Johnston was the only offensive starter who had yet to see game
action while the defense had four players (Leslie, Sieczkowski) start, however middle linebacker Gary Onuekwusi and cornerback Tevrin Brandon both saw
game action at their previous schools, Temple and UConn. Three true freshman
saw the field, linebacker Peyton Minnich saw significant time finishing with two
tackles while safety Kevin Butler and running back Lavon Chaney each played on
special teams.
STERLING TIES NALBONE FOR 8TH IN RECEIVING
Junior wideout Neal Sterling passed former teammate Tristan Roberts on the
Monmouth all-time receptions list when he secured his 93rd career catch in the
season opener at Montana State. Sterling now sits at 7th all time, 8 receptions
behind John Nalbone. Sterling’s 16 yards receiving against the Bobcats a week
ago put him at 1,079 for his career, to tie Nalbone for 8th all-time on the career
receiving yards charts.
SPILLANE CLIMBING THE SCORING TREE
It took one game of 2013 for senior kicker Eric Spillane to move up to fifth alltime in scoring after his eight point effort against Montana State. With 208 points
he is a mere two points shy of tying running backs Matt Merklinger and Chris
Reed with 210 points. With another eight points he’ll tie Miles Austin with 216
points for second all-time. Spillane’s first quarter 45 yard field goal was one yard
short of his career high.

ALSO TAKING OVER THE PUNTING DUTIES
Defensive lineman Darnell Leslie recorded three tackles for loss in his first collegiate game at Montana State, accounting for three of Monmouth’s four TFL’s
on the night. It was the most tackles for loss in a single game for a Hawk since
linebacker Dan Sullivan had 4.5 at Wagner last season in a 38-17 victory.
ALSO TAKING OVER THE PUNTING DUTIES
Senior Eric Spillane handled punting duties for the first time in his college career
last Thursday in Bozeman, Mont. He averaged 44.6 yards per punt on five punts,
including booming a 60 yarder that fell at the Montana State ten yard line.
LIKE A ROCK
The junior defensive line duo of Eric Macik and Pat O’Hara have been consistant
pass rushers for the Hawks over the last two seasons. Macik comes into the
season with 6.5 sacks after his 4.5 sack effort as a sophomore. O’Hara had a
breakout year in 2012, with 3.5 sacks in his first season as a starter. Former MU
defensive lineman Todd Stevens is currently 10th all-time with 12.5 sacks.
A NEW FACE LEADS THE MU RUNNING BACK CORPS
In July former Robert Morris Hall of Fame back Sam Dorsett joined the MU Football staff to mentor the Hawks’ running backs. The three-time All-NEC performer
still holds the Colonial record for rushing touchdowns (29), and 100-yard rushing
games (19). Dorsett coached five seasons at RMU before spending ‘12 with Saint
Francis, which was ranked 12th in rushing offense in the country.

• With last weekend’s setback to the
Bobcats, the Hawks are now 4-17 in
openers all-time. Their last win came
against Fordham at the start of the 2006
season.
• Monmouth is 0-3 all-time on September 7th with losses to Southern Connecticut, Towson and Lafayette. The two
games against the Tigers and the Leopards were decided by one point.
• Sophomore placekicker Lucas San-
tangelo flourished out in Montana,
averaging 64.6 yards per kickoff. Santangelo had four touchbacks on his five
kicks. Last season he had eight touchbacks all season.
• Sophomore Joe Johnson led the
Hawks in tackles last weekend with eight
tackles against Montana State.
• Eric Sumlin’s 77 yard touchdown
catch was the second of his career. The
Dover, Del. native had one touchdown
reception as a sophomore in 2012, a 28
yard pass from Kyle Frazier against Cornell.
 MU will be looking to junior Pat Gray
to force more turnovers this season as
the Hawks forced just 17 turnovers all
2012 which was 75th in the country. The
Hawks forced a fumble against Montana
State but did not recover it.
With his 135 yard performance against
the Bobcats, junior running back Julian
Hayes recorded his sixth 100-yard rushing performance. That currently places
him fourth all-time, one behind Joe Migliore and Chris Reed. Matt Merklinger’s
eight is second all-time while MU great
David Sinisi clocks in at an impressive
25 games with 100+ yards.

THE LAST TIME OUT ...
MONTANA ST. 42 MONMOUTH 24
Aug. 29, 2013 • Bobcat Stadium • Bozeman, Montana
The Montana State Bobcats, the consensus number two team in the
country, used a dominating opening half to secure a 42-24 victory over
Monmouth in the opening game of the 2013 season in front of 21,007
fans at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats scored on five of its first six drives to take a 32-3 lead with
4:57 left in the first half. A 57 yard pick six by defensive tackle Craig
Ashworth put the game at 39-3 at halftime. Monmouth battled back in
the second half, outscoring Montana State 21-3 in the second half but the
first half deficit was too much to overcome.
After the Hawks defense held on the first Bobcat possession of the
second half, MU junior Julian Hayes scored the first touchdown of the
2013 season when he punched it in from three yards out. Hayes had a
solid first half for the Hawks with 12 carries for 100 yards, including a
40 yard scamper.
Junior Eric Sumlin cut the Bobcat lead to 42-17 when he beat his man
and quarterback Brandon Hill hit him in stride for a 77 yard score. On the
next MU possession Hill connected with Elijah Phillips on a 17 yard slant
to finish the scoring at 42-24.
Hill finished 18-of-31 for 240 yards with a pair of touchdowns and two
interceptions. McGhee was 19-of-27 for 240 yards but also added 54
yards rushing and a touchdown to his totals. Montana State racked up
561 yards of total offense compared to MU’s 355.
Hayes finished with 135 yards on 22 carries for a 6.1 yard average.
Lamar Davenport had four catches for 57 yards while Phillips had three
grabs for 35 yards and the score.
Montana State took a mere 2:25 to drive 80 yards on the Hawks, with
the Bobcats earning first downs on four straight plays setting themselves
up deep in MU territory. After running back Cody Kirk converted a third
and one, McGhee took the ball in himself to score the game’s first
touchdown. MSU went for two and went ahead 8-0.
After a three and out on the first MU possession, McGhee went to work
again, sparking MSU’s second drive with a 49 yard run. Two plays later
Kirk piled in to put his MONMOUTH

MONMOUTH HAWKS
The only head coach in the history of football at
Monmouth, Kevin Callahan has developed a winning
tradition in West Long Branch. Callahan, whose 114
wins is 15th among active coaches at the FCS level,
will usher in a new era for MU football when the
Hawks join the Big South Conference in 2014.
Beginning his 21st season at the helm of the
Hawks, Callahan has amassed a 114-92 record
while his teams have captured five conference titles
in the past 16 seasons. Along the way, Monmouth
has been ranked among the top 20 in total offense on two occasions
and in total defense five times. Meanwhile, numerous players have
earned conference, regional and national honors. Regarded as an
outstanding coach by his peers, Callahan served as the President of the
FCS Football Coaches Committee in 2007-08 and has been a member
of the committee since 2002. Under his watch, five former Hawks have
earned spots on NFL rosters, including All-Pro wide receiver Miles Austin
of the Dallas Cowboys.
The 2012 campaign saw the Hawks defeat a Colonial Athletic
Association team for the second straight season with a 41-6 rout of
The University of Rhode Island. Individually, quarterback Kyle Frazier
finished his career by rewriting many single season Monmouth records
while six Hawks earned all-conference honors. Once again the Hawks
were impressive in the classroom, with the team registering an overall
grade point average of 2.99 and 15 Hawks earning NEC Academic Honor
Roll. Five players made it to the commissioner’s honor roll, while three
Hawks earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District team, the
13th consecutive season MU was represented on the list.
In 2011, the Hawks posted a undefeated record on the road for just
the third time in program history, going a perfect 5-0. On September
17th, the Hawks knocked off 2012 NCAA Semifinalist Villanova, 20-9
for one of the marquee wins in the program’s short history. MU had five
players on the All-NEC Teams, including wide receiver Neal Sterling, who
was named NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Hawks also boasted a
pair of finalists for The Jerry Rice Award, given to the nation’s top FCS
freshman. MU was the only team with more than one player named as
a finalist. Senior captain Jose Gumbs, a three-time all-league selection,
capped off his stellar career by being named Third Team All-America
while finishing third all-time in tackles. Academically, 22 players earned
Dean’s List Honors while 27 members of the team were named to the
NEC Academic Honor Roll.
In 2010 the Hawks were four points away from posting seven wins,
with four one-point losses. Off the field Callahan’s team had the best
grade point average among all the Northeast Conference football squads
while a member of the Hawks earned CoSIDA Academic All-District
honors for the 11th straight season. Six different players earned a spot
on the All-NEC teams, including offensive guard Shawn Wright’s fourth
consecutive honor.
On Oct. 31, 2009, Callahan and the Monmouth program reached
another milestone as the Hawks recorded the 100th win in program
history with a win over Bryant University at Kessler Field. Defensive
back Jose Gumbs earned Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the
Year as a redshirt sophomore; while five other Hawks earned spots on
NEC All-Conference teams. David Sinisi ended his career by breaking
over 30 school records, while becoming the NEC all-time leader in scoring
and rushing yards. The two-time Walter Payton Award candidate led all
active Division I football players (FBS and FCS) in scoring and led all
active FCS players in yards rushing, rushing yards per game and rushing
touchdowns. Academically, 22 Hawks were named to the NEC Academic
Honor Roll and Jon Stolarz and Andrew Musick were two of just 53 FCS
players named to the NACDA Academic All-Star Team.
13
Callahan led the Hawks to their
10th winning season in 2008,

MU VS LIBERTY • GAME 2
2013 FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
RECYCLED NOTES
MONMOUTH HEADS WEST FOR GOLD RUSH ...
Thursday’s game will mark the second straight year that
Montana State opens its season with a night game and the
designated ‘Gold Rush’ game. The Hawks will play in front
of a sold out crowd, while Bobcat Stadium officially seats
just under 18,000, a crowd of 20,767 showed up for last
year’s ‘Gold Rush’ game to celebrate the stadium’s newly
constructed lights. The crowd should end up ranking in the
top-three that Monmouth has played in front of. In 2007,
the Hawks faced a Joe Flacco led Delaware team in front of
21,431 spectators. Two years later MU won a 31-28 game
against Old Dominion University in front of 19,782 fans
down in Norfolk, Va.
HAYES ON CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST
Monmouth junior running back Julian Hayes was named to
the CFPA Preseason Watch list after his 659 yard, 11 touchdown performance in 2012. The Middletown, Conn. native
was named running back performer of the week honorable
mention by the CFPA after his career-high 158 yard outburst
at Duquesne. In two years in the Blue and White, Hayes sits
in sixth all-time in rushing attempts, eighth in MU history
in rushing yards with a two-year total of 1,464, and fourth
all-time with 25 touchdowns. He has put together five 100
yard games and six multiple touchdown performances as a
Hawk. His 14 touchdowns as a freshman rank fourth all-time
in a single season at Monmouth.
2013 CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED ...
Going with the a trend for the past few seasons, Monmouth has announced a group of five captains that will
lead the 2013 team. Dave Damirgian, Patrick O’Hara,
and Tevrin Brandon come from the defensive side of the
ball, while Mike McLafferty and Elijah Phillips will lead
the offensive group.
Damirgian, a senior linebacker has appeared in 17
games as a Hawk. He registered 15 tackles, including 2.5
tackles for loss in 2011 before enjoying a strong season
in 2012. O’Hara, a sophomore defensive lineman, has appeared in 21 games the last two seasons, totaling 32 tackles in that time. In 2012, he finished second on the team in
both tackles for loss with 6.5 and sacks with 3.5. Brandon
transferred to Monmouth from the University of Connecticut last year and had to sit out last season due to NCAA
transfer rules. The cornerback appeared in all 11 games
for UConn in 2011, registering six tackles.
Making the switch from defense to offense, Phillips will
appear as a wide receiver for MU in 2013 after playing
defensive back the last two seasons. Phillips, who has battled injuries throughout his career, appeared in 10 games
across the past two seasons making 36 stops. McLafferty,
a fifth year senior, has appeared in 31 games throughout the last three seasons, catching 44 balls. In 2012, the
tight end ranked fifth on the squad with 23 receptions and
fourth with 228 yards.
SLOW STARTS
The Hawks are 4-16 in season openers throughout program history, including a 2-14 mark when MU opens on
the road. Monmouth has lost the last six openers to Rhode
Island (27-24), Maine (21-14), Colgate (twice) and twice to
Lehigh including in each of the last two seasons. The good
news is that the last two seasons that MU opened with a
win, the Hawks went on to 10-win seasons and a NEC title.
In 2006, the Blue and White defeated Fordham 23-9 in the
Bronx while they also beat St. Peter’s handily 44-3 in Jersey City during the 2004 season.
