Author Biographies
Brittany Bettjeman is in her third year of a Bachelor of Arts degree, double majoring
in History and Screen and Media Studies. Next year she hopes to complete a
Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching. Her other interests include representations of
women in the media, international film, fishing and gardening.
Petra Burns is in her last year of studying a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History.
She has a particular interest in social and cultural histories, and environmental history.
Outside of her studies she enjoys netball, reading and cooking, and has recently
discovered a love of tramping.
Will Cawkwell is in his last year of studying History and Hospitality Management at
the University of Waikato. Next year he looks forward to working towards a Graduate
Diploma of Secondary Teaching. Will enjoys cooking, reading, outdoor pursuits,
travel, and spending time with relatives and friends.
Kate Christie is in her third year studying towards her Bachelor of Social Sciences
degree, double majoring in History and Sociology at the University of Waikato. In the
future she intends to become a secondary teacher through the University of Waikato’s
Tauranga campus. She has a particular interest in histories of social inequalities and
enjoys reading and the outdoors.
Emma Jamieson is currently in her third year of study, completing a Bachelor of
Social Sciences at the University of Waikato. She enjoys spending time with friends
and family or reading a book. Next year Emma hopes to undertake a Graduate
Diploma in Secondary School Teaching in Tauranga. Her research topic was chosen
as it seemed very interesting and she could relate to the location.
Murray Nacey is studying towards a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in
History and Anthropology. He is a sixth generation New Zealander of Irish, Scottish,
French and Danish extraction. He enjoys writing local and national history and hopes
to be published in the next two years. His interests include material and social history
and culture, and genealogy.
Kathryn Parsons is the New Zealand Collection Librarian at the University of
Waikato Library. After some time away from study, she has appreciated being part of
this special topic class and enjoyed the experience and challenge of the research. She
thrives on seeking local material for the collection, hence the discovery of the diaries.
Sabion Pivac is working towards completing a Bachelor of Social Sciences in
History. She has enjoyed working through the process of original research and the
steps involved in publishing a journal. Sabion’s Croation descent sparked the interest
for her essay topic.
Nikita Prinsloo is studying for a double major in English and History at the
University of Waikato. Following the completion of her degree she will endeavour to
study Secondary Teaching. Nikita’s interest in the Springbok Tour has grown out of
her desire to know more about her South African roots and the two countries she calls
home.
Lauren Retter is in her third year studying for a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree
at the University of Waikato. In 2014 she is hoping to continue on with postgraduate
studies in Secondary Education at the University of Waikato. She enjoys reading,
staying active and socialising with her friends and family.
Fetu’una’i Varea is a third year student at the University of Waikato. She is
currently studying for her Bachelor of Social Sciences degree, with a double major in
History and Anthropology. Fetu’una’i is looking forward to finishing her studies and
hopes to find a career in research.
Charlotte Weston is studying towards a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in
Anthropology. She hopes to further her education with postgraduate study, but not
before she spends some time satisfying her wanderlust after the completion of her
degree.
Ryan Wood is in his final year of a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History. He has
been interested in history from an early age, New Zealand history in particular. One
of his favourite questions to ask is ‘What If?’. Ryan is pleased to be able to combine
these two passions in essay form.
