Financial Aid Program Fee Payment Schedule Program Description The Romance Languages Department will offer one graduate course for Masters Level and advanced undergraduate students in July 2016 entitled “Decentering the Spanish Conquest: The Indigenous Experience in the Canary Islands.” The location of the course will be the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The course will run from July 1st to July 26th. The course “Decentering the Spanish Conquest: The Indigenous Experience in the Canary Islands” will offer a nontraditional view of the Spanish Conquest of the Americas and the Canary Islands through the study of historical, literary, artistic and cultural texts. Students will focus on the study of the Indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands and their experience of the conquest of this archipelago and the Americas. The course will be taught in Spanish. www. hunter. cuny. edu/ educationabroad Why The Canary Islands The Canary Islands were the first colonial experiment of Spain. In fact, the archipelago was the last stop that Columbus made before arriving in the Caribbean Sea. The Atlantic archipelago was critical to Spanish colonization and that legacy remains important in America today. The islands were a laboratory for the occupation of the Americas: slavery, sugar cane plantations, and in the eyes of Europe, both have a common birth. The Canary Islands constitute a unique geographical space. These islands sit only 115 kilometers away from the African coast and 1,050 kilometers away from Europe. They belong politically in Spain, geographically in Africa, and culturally in the Caribbean. Geography has been a major element in the construction of the Canary Islands as a utopian space. Due to the transatlantic cultural connection to the American continent, which began in 1492, the Canary Islands have a close relationship to the Americas. Because of this triple continentality and hybrid status, the archipelago is an ideal location to teach Spanish language, literature, and history. Cultural Excursions Students will read literary, historical, and cultural texts to examine the life of the Pre-Hispanic civilizations prior to the conquest. We will also learn about the indigenous civilization outside class through cultural visits and field trips.
