Travel Grant
What is a Jewish Studies Study Abroad/Research Grant?
The Grant (made possible this year by a gift from the Henry And Sylvia Yaschik Foundation) is a
financial award of $2500 to be used to help fund a study abroad experience or research travel in Israel for
five undergraduate or graduate students who have an established interest in Jewish Studies.Undergraduate
students who are not eligible to receive a Summer Study Abroad Fellowship or compete for a Passport
Travel Grant are eligible to compete for this award.
When can I apply for a Grant?
You must apply by the posted deadline, prior to the term you plan to study or conduct research in Israel.
You can apply for the award multiple times; however you can only receive the award once. You cannot
delay the award; it must be used for the term listed on your application.
Student Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered for this grant, an applicant must:






Have an established interest in Jewish Studies (as evidenced by enrollment in Jewish Studies and
Jewish Studies-related courses) and a continuing interest in Jewish Studies (as evidenced by plans
for further study in this area).
Be in the process of applying, or have already applied to, a study abroad program. Proof of
acceptance must be provided to the Study Abroad Office, or the student must have an articulated
research plan and institutional contacts necessary to conduct it, before funds are released.
Be a full time USC student
Be earning at least three credits for his/her study abroad or research experience
Be in good academic standing with a minimum undergraduate 3.0 GPA or graduate 3.5 GPA
Submit completed application materials to the Study Abroad Office by the posted deadline.
A complete application includes: Jewish Studies Study Abroad/Research Travel Grant
Application, Academic Reference Form, Financial Aid Award Letter, and an unofficial USC
transcript. For graduate students intending to conduct research, a detailed research plan
and budget along with letters of support from USC faculty who will oversee the research are
also required.
Study Abroad Program Requirements
While the USC study abroad website lists a number of pre-approved study abroad programs, there are only
a few pre-approved programs in Israel. These two programs are the Rothberg International School at
Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the USAC program at the University of Haifa. Students wishing to
take part in a program that does not appear on our pre-approved list must contact the Study Abroad Office
and speak with an advisor regarding individual program or reserach plan approval. All students studying
abroad in Israel will also have to complete a destination of risk petition, which is also facilitated by the
Study Abroad Office. Both credit-bearing service learning and internship programs that include structured,
on-site supervision also meet program requirements.
The following types of programs meet requirements for the purpose of applying for a Jewish Studies
Summer Travel Grant:



Study abroad programs sponsored by an Israeli university or program provider that include topics
related to Jewish Studies
Direct enrollment in an Israeli institution to study topics related to Jewish Studies
Appropriate internship programs related to Jewish Studies.
*Approved topics of study include (but are not limited to):



Courses in Jewish history, culture, religion, philosophy, art, or music;
Study in Israel of: Middle East politics; history of Israel; Hebrew; Arabic; and other languages;
and
Other study abroad activities that the Jewish Studies Program deems appropriate.
Grant Disbursement
You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline. The actual
grant funds are disbursed at the start of your term abroad, depending on your term in Israel. In order to
access the funds, you will need to go to VIP and apply the award to your student account. Proof of
acceptance into your study abroad program must be provided to the Study Abroad Office before funds are
released.

The application deadline is noon on February 1st. All forms must be typed, then printed, and submitted
to the Study Abroad Office. Incomplete or handwritten applications will not be considered.

Transcript")
All application materials are due by the posted deadline. Late, incomplete or handwritten
applications will not be considered.
