STUDY ABROAD IN JERUSALEM Arabic Immersion Program ArtJerusalem This program focuses on Modern Standard Arabic—the formal language employed in books, newspapers, news broadcasts and formal speeches across the Arab world—as well as the spoken Levantine dialect. In addition to intensive classroom study, students participate in clubs, tours and special activities designed to promote interaction with native Arabic speakers, society and culture. ArtJerusalem, a joint initiative of Bezalel and the RIS, combines artistic training at both the basic and advanced levels, with university study and first-hand exposure to Israeli society. DOME provides an interdisciplinary approach to this exciting field with courses in society, culture and politics of the Middle East. Following the Winter Ulpan, students take a core course in Middle Eastern studies and a thematic, interdisciplinary seminar culminating in a two-day field trip/retreat. Students are exposed to Israel’s history, as well as its vibrant culture and diverse society, through field trips, special activities and interaction with local Israelis. Following Ulpan, participants study in classes together with Israeli students in various departments of the University and take one of the research seminars offered at RIS. The program also includes a speaker series with researchers from the Hebrew University as well as an excursion on a contemporary theme. https://overseas.huji.ac.il/spring DanceJerusalem DanceJerusalem combines artistic training in dance at the world famous Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD), with academic study at RIS and exposure to Israel’s rich culture and diverse society. The program offers university-level training in the disciplines of Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance (including Ohad Naharin’s Gaga), Choreography, Repertoire and Improvisation, together with Israeli dancers. After the presemester Hebrew Ulpan, students begin their program, which includes the core courses “Music in Israel,” private lessons, and participation in musical ensembles with Israeli peers. Placements are available in a variety of areas including health services, the media social research, government, business and more.
