Statement - impact on practice - a composerʼs view
I've realised my work - usually written for concerts - is already heard in my
head, as I imagine and write it, as if in a concert hall. The sound comes as if
from a platform a few metres away. The visual accompaniment (interior of a
concert hall) is so predictable as to be cancelled out of my calculations.
Writing for headphone listening, with unexpected visual events very much in
the forefront forced me to reverse these very habitual perceptions, with (to
me) interesting changes having to be made especially to
orchestral/instrumental balances
