Statement re Impact of BBC Proms Music Walk
This project stood out within the Proms 2012 season as an innovative
approach to creating an accessible platform for contemporary music. It was
highly regarded artistically across our curatorial teams, led by Roger Wright
(Controller, BBC Radio 3 & Director, BBC Proms.)
As Interactive Editor with responsibility for the Proms and BBC Radio 3, I
have a particular interest in projects that engage the broadest public through
the digital realm.
Online resources are a substantial and growing part of how the BBC
addresses its remit of universal reach. Proms Music Walk represented a
significant new model in this emerging area - projecting outstanding new
compositions to a broad audience. Its online platform - a dedicated site
accessed through the BBC Proms site - served a public who could visit sites
in person throughout the Proms season and a public who engaged solely
online. Our feedback and figures (see separate note) suggested an
impressive depth and extent of public impact - particularly considering the
project took place when London was, in cultural terms, an exceptionally
crowded space. The climactic Music Walk event on 17th August was well
attended and very warmly enjoyed.
As a project which reached out to the public in what was for us a significant
new format - using online to link place, new music and audience in a focussed
way - it had a significant impact not only on participating audiences, but on
our continuing debates around how we reach and stimulate audiences in the
future.
Yours sincerely
