Utah's mining legacy goes back to the 1850s leaving us with an
estimated 17,000 abandoned mine openings. These old mines present a
multitude of hazards, any one of which can be deadly to the unexpected
explorer. Possible hazards include oxygen-deficient or toxic air,
radioactivity, hazardous waste, water hazards, explosives, and
unstable conditions.
The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining's Abandoned Mine Reclamation
Program and the Utah State Office of the Bureau of Land Management
have cooperatively produced this video as an educational tool to
highlight the dangers associated with abandoned mines.
