A word from the chair…
This is a very exciting
time in Languages,
Literatures,
and
Cultures.
We are
hiring
first
class
faculty from around
the world and placing
our graduate students in top-flight
institutions. Our faculty continue
to be extraordinarily active in
teaching and research. In addition,
this year, we will continue to grow:
hiring two faculty members in
Spanish, one in French, and one in
Chinese. In January, we will also
host a group of international
scholars for our 15th Annual
Comparative
Literature

Mission Statement.
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (LLC) has a
threefold mission: 1. to provide high quality instruction in languages,
literatures, and cultures to all students at the University of South
Carolina; 2. to train the next generation of teachers and researchers
through excellence in graduate education; 3. to be an internationally
recognized center of excellence for the creation and dissemination of
new knowledge about languages, literatures, and cultures.

Welcome new faculty…
Congratulations to recent
Ph.D. Florencia Cornet who
won the PFF Award for Teaching,
Research, and Service from the
Center for Teaching Excellence.
Yun Zhu accepted a tenure track
position as an assistant professor in
Chinese at Temple University.
Caroline Mosser, a PhD student in the
Comparative Literature program, has
received a Presidential Teaching
Fellowships in the Program on Social
Advocacy and Ethical Life. This is the
first year these fellowships have been
awarded to incoming students and to
students in their first year of
graduate study.
Robert Irons, PhD student in
Comparative Literature, was accepted
as a participant in the Folger Institute
seminar “Shakespeare and
Sacraments” to be directed by
Professor Sarah Beckwith. He has also
received a $4,000 grant to support
his participation.
Jana Fedtke accepted the position of
Assistant Professor of Asian Studies
and Literature at the Asian University
for Women in Chittagong,
Bangladesh.
Congratulations to Christiane
Steckenbiller, CPLT PhD student
working on German and British lit,
who not only won a CPLT Cantey
Award, but also the WGST Harriott
Hampton Faucette Award.
Congratulations!
Barbara
Wachob,
Assistant
to
the
Graduate Director, was
chosen as a recipient of
the College of Arts and
Sciences'
2011 Pamela
W. Young Classified Staff
Excellence
Award ..
Barbara was one of six of
the over 225 classified staff of the
College who were recognized for
exceptional service to their departments
and the college.
Recipients were
nominated by the departments and
chosen by the Dean’s office.
The Dean says of Barbara, “You have
proven yourself by your dedicated
service to the Department, College and
community to be
an ‘invaluable
asset’. Your insight, determination and
selflessness
have
made
a
profound impact on the quality of
service afforded to all. Your
uncompromising ‘can-do’ attitude is
reflected in the professional atmosphere
and efficiency of the Department Chair's
Office.”
