Chinese Talent Show

Waikato Chinese students showcase their talents, at the annual Chinese
Talent Show organised by the Chinese Students Association of the Waikato
Region Inc. Entry is free, but tickets must be booked in advance.
Chinese culture classes
Monday 7 September, 6pm and 7pm

6pm-7pm: Tai Chi teacher, Kevin Ma, will give a class on the philosophy,
history and principles of Tai Chi, and how it can be applied in our lives to
benefit ourselves and others. Participants will have the chance to join in and
try some basic Tai Chi moves.
7pm-8pm: Mandarin teacher, Zheng Wei, will talk about the the origin and
evolution of different Chinese characters, and explain some of the stories and
customs behind these characters. (Free)
Chinese Culture Stalls
Wednesday 9 September, 12pm-2pm, University of Waikato Student Centre
Try Chinese mooncakes – a traditional food eaten at mid-autumn festival,
have your name written in calligraphy, or check out some of our awesome
Chinese costumes. (Free)
Mandarin 101
9 September, 5pm, Waikato Uni Student Centre, Level 2, M2.04a
An introduction to Mandarin absolute beginners, run by the Waikato Mandarin
Corner. Learn some of the basics of Mandarin, find out more about the four
tones in Mandarin, and master some basic phrases. (Free entry)

Introductory classes to Mandarin for beginners, held by the teachers at WIE.
Learn some of the basics of Mandarin, find out more about the four tones in
Mandarin, and master some basic phrases.
The 6pm-7pm class will be on using Chinese to go shopping, and the 7pm8pm class will be on using Chinese to order at a restaurant. (Free)
Chinese Performing Art Troupe

Prepare yourself for an outstanding and colourful cultural
experience! Huazhong University of Science & Technology Art Troupe are
coming from China to perform in four locations in New Zealand, including the
mighty Waikato! Their Chinese cultural performance "The Far East Yangtze
River" includes dance, traditional Chinese instruments, and folk songs.
Tickets are free, but be quick as spaces are limited.
Chinese Film Night

As part of Chinese Language Week, the Hamilton Chinese Students
Association will be holding a Chinese film night at Hoyts cinemas. The movie
will be a new release, so we can (almost) guarantee you won't have seen it!
There will be English subtitles.
All are welcome, so bring along friends and family. As tickets will be limited,
make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.
China-inspired Craft Activity

A great weekend activity for both the adults and the kids! Have a go at some
traditional Chinese crafts, including paper cutting (free entry and you will
receive a free gift!)
Mandarin classes for kids

Learning language through fun and games! The Mandarin teachers at WIE
are holding a free introductory Mandarin class for kids 5 years and up. The
class will include basic phrases in Chinese, Chinese culture and festivals, and
crafts and games. This is best age for learning languages, so giving your child
the opportunity to learn the basics of Mandarin now will give them a huge
advantage in the future. (Free)
Traditional Chinese Music
12 September, 3pm, Waikato University Academy of Performing Arts
Appreciate the sounds of traditional Chinese instruments, such as the
Guzheng, Guqin and Erhu, played by talented local Chinese musicians. Also
take the chance to learn more about traditional Chinese music - an integral
part of Chinese culture, with thousands of years of history and close links to
Chinese stories, poetry, and philosophy.
