Data Privacy Statement
The University of Waikato Institute for Business Research
This privacy statement outlines how The University of Waikato Institute for Business Research
undertakes to transmit and store your data in a manner that ensures security against
unauthorised access, alteration or deletion, at a level commensurate with its sensitivity.
For the purposes of this document ‘Survey’ refers to all surveys IBR currently runs online and
‘Business Data’ refers to the set of data collected about individual businesses using the Survey
questionnaire. The University of Waikato Institute for Business Research is the department
responsible for ensuring all aspects of data privacy outlined in this document are adhered to.
Data Security
The University of Waikato utilises industry standard security measures in all aspects of data
transmission and storage.
 SSL encryption is used to safeguard all data transmitted over the internet between the Survey
client software and The University of Waikato’s secure server.
 The University of Waikato utilizes an authentication and authorisation mechanism to ensure only
data transmissions from validated users can populate the database of Business Data.
Data Confidentiality
Business Data is collected and stored in such a way that the identity of the individual business that
the data relates to remains anonymous.
 Business Data collected by the survey does not include details that would enable individual
businesses to be identified either by name, location or IRD/GST numbers.
 Each individual set of Business Data is stored and identified using a unique Participant Code
generated by the supplier of the data or the IBR. The Participant Code is a numeric code and as
such cannot include a readily recognizable business identifier.
 Information provided in the ‘Notes’ field of the survey questionnaire by the supplier of the
Business Data that might help identify a business are deleted from the record during routine edit
checks.
Data Access
Security standards and procedures regarding access to the database of Business Data are maintained
to prevent unauthorized access, removal or alteration of data.
 Access to the database of Business Data is restricted to employees authorized by The University
of Waikato Institute for Business Research.
 Authorized employees are only allowed access to the database for the purpose of performing
specific tasks. These employees are informed on our data privacy policies and have signed
confidentiality agreements before being allowed access.
Non-Disclosure of Business Data
The University of Waikato Institute for Business Research undertakes to ensure Business
Data collected by the Survey remains confidential.
 Business Data in the unprocessed form as collected by the Survey questionnaire will not be
disclosed in any publication or provided to any third party either in full or in part.
Aggregate Data Reported
The Business Data collected by the Survey will be utilised for the purpose of generating financial and
statistical reports. All reports generated from the Business Data will reveal only aggregate results;
meaning individual businesses results will not be identifiable from these reports.
 Results are primarily aggregated by business classification (ANZSIC), income bands and generic
location (Major Cities, Other Cities and Towns & Rural).
 A minimum sample size for reporting is employed to ensure businesses’ individual results can not
be derived. This minimum sample size is varied depending on the relative uniformity of the data
to be reported and the number of businesses in New Zealand in this category.
