Safety and Security
01. Introduction
The intent of these guidelines is to reduce your personal risk and provide a “survival
strategy” in the unlikely event that an Active Shooter Incident should occur on campus.
The guidelines were established with content developed by the Department of Homeland
Security and the New York City Police Department
02. What should I do?
If you hear gunfire or are alerted of an active shooter event, you should:



AVOID, BARRICADE, or CONFRONT (ABC):
Avoid – Evacuate the area immediately if it can be done in a safe manner
leaving behind your belongings.
Barricade – If you can’t flee:
o Lock or barricade the doors with large heavy objects to make entry as
difficult as possible
o Do not stand by doors and windows
o Turn off lights, close blinds, turn off radios and computer monitors
o Keep yourself out of sight and take adequate cover/protection(i.e.
concrete wall, thick desk, - may protect you from bullets)
o Remain quiet and silence your cell phones, but continue to monitor the
Pace
Alert system.
Confront – As a last resort, if you come face to face with the assailant attempt to
quickly overpower the individual in the most violent manner possible using
whatever makeshift weapons you can find.
When safe to do, call 911 or Safety and Security (Use Security button or dial 777 on a
campus phone or dial 914-773-3700 in Westchester, 914-442-4111 in White Plains or
212-346-1800 in New York), provide exact information about the location of the incident,
physical description of the shooter(s), location of the injured, etc.
It is important to remember that the responding Police Officer’s primary mission is to
neutralize the shooter(s), you should:
 Remain calm, and follow the officers’ instructions
 Put down any items in your hands(i.e. bags, jackets)
 Immediately raise hands and spread fingers
 Keep hands visible at all times
 Avoid making quick movements toward officers
 Avoid pointing, screaming and/or yelling
 Do not stop to ask officers for help or directions when evacuating, just proceed in
the direction from which officers are entering the premises
