Annual
Professor Vincent O’Sullivan
In the1950s and ‘60s, Frank Sargeson and Dan Davin, his junior by ten years, were the best known living New Zealand
fiction writers. They liked each other, and guardedly admired each other’s work. This lecture considers some of the
currents, and cross-currents, of that friendship.
Emeritus Professor Vincent O’Sullivan is one of New Zealand’s
most important writers. His novel Let the River Stand won the
Montana Book Award for 1994 and he held the Katherine Mansfield
Memorial Fellowship in Menton the same year. In 2006 he was
awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for literary achievement, and
he was named Poet Laureate in 2013. Prof. O’Sullivan has taught
English at the University of Waikato and at Victoria University.
