Dr Derek Smith was born in Dundee, Scotland, and graduated from St. Andrew’s University before obtaining a doctorate from Oxford.
He spent four years at Sheffield University as Research Fellow and Temporary Lecturer in Chemistry before taking up a Lectureship at
the University of Waikato in 1973, and recently retired from the University of Waikato as Associate-Professor in Chemistry in 2009.
