Title: Examining general managers in the North American professional sport context: Upper echelons and logics of action as
determinants of performance
This research focuses on the extent to which top management team (TMT) employees within the North American professional
sport context shape performance outcomes. As in non-sport organizations, executive managers who comprise the TMT are
granted direct authority to make decisions relative to human resources. Thus, my analyses focus on these individuals and their
role as the principal strategic decision makers in these organizations. In my dissertation, I seek to make sense of the role that
these employees play in this process by investigating TMT employee backgrounds and experiences as well as prevalent
institutional logics of action as mechanisms for explaining performance variations observed during competition in these contexts.
