Dear Pace Graduates, Parents, Families, and Friends,
There are days we look forward to—months and even years—in advance. Today is one of
those days. Welcome to your 2015 Pace University Commencement.
There is nothing like the warmth, pride, and sense of accomplishment that fills a room
on Commencement day. For our graduates, today is the culmination of your Pace University
undergraduate or graduate experience. You arrived focused, driven, and determined. You worked
hard and took advantage of the opportunities that Pace provided. Today you depart as Pace
alumni. You are prepared to realize your dreams and you deserve all the praise, admiration, and
accolades that you receive today. Congratulations!
As you move on to the next phase of your life, remember what you have learned here, the
people you met here, and the experiences you shared here. Also remember that you are now
part of a vast network of past, present, and future Pace alumni. The University and the Pace
Network are deeply intertwined. Each has been shaped by and shapes the other. Please celebrate
your place in the Pace Network by staying engaged with your professors and fellow students,
supporting future students as you were once supported, and helping to ensure that Pace remains
a university where students come to achieve their dreams.

Doctor of Laws
Preet Bharara
Preet Bharara—United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York—has a commitment to justice that
inspires us all. Trained as a lawyer, he received an AB in Government from Harvard College in 1990, magna cum
laude, and a JD from Columbia Law School in 1993, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review. Before his
appointment as United States Attorney, Mr. Bharara had a distinguished career as an Assistant US Attorney in the
Southern District, and then as Chief Counsel and Staff Director of the US Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee
on Administrative Oversight and the Courts.
As an Assistant US Attorney, Mr. Bharara prosecuted cases involving organized crime, racketeering, securities
fraud, money laundering, narcotics trafficking, and other crimes.
During his tenure with the Senate Judiciary Committee, he helped lead the Committee’s investigation into the firing
of United States Attorneys, seeking to protect the administration of justice from undue political influence.
President Barack Obama nominated Mr. Bharara to become the United States Attorney for the Southern District
of New York on May 15, 2009, and he was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on August 7, 2009.
Since his appointment as United States Attorney, Mr. Bharara has advocated for “the build[ing] of an ethical culture
that becomes self-sustaining” in the financial sector and in government. He has backed these powerful words with
equally inspiring and courageous actions. Under his leadership, the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District
of New York has acted energetically to promote institutional accountability in financial institutions. These decisions
impact not just New Yorkers, but all Americans and even those beyond America’s borders. He has been unafraid to
use federal statutory authority to prosecute government fraud without regard to political affiliation. He has also
taken a strong stand against terrorists and arms traffickers, noting that as national security threats come from all
corners of the globe, “the long arm of the law has to get even longer.” His tenure as US Attorney has given force to
the precept that all stand equally before the law and that justice does not favor the wealthy or powerful.
For his many professional accomplishments, his dedication to the legal profession and administration of justice, his
inspiring example to others both within and outside the legal profession, Pace University is honored to confer upon
Preet Bharara the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereunto.

Barry Klarberg excels in worlds where artists are only as successful as their last project and Hall of Fame athletes fail as often
as they succeed. These young professionals, blessed with incomparable gifts of song, entertainment, and athletic ability, but
often without the educational experience to manage their opportunities and success, depend on him to turn their God-given
talents into profitable and trustworthy brands.
It’s no wonder that Mr. Klarberg says the education in communication skills he received from Pace University is as important
as the bachelor of business administration or the master’s degree in taxation the University bestowed upon him. He stands
above others in his profession by connecting with his clients on a personal level and demonstrating his high professional
standards and even higher ethical and principled approach to their careers. His sage financial tutelage and caring, empathetic
approach to their lives helps ensure their futures. In the process, he has become one of the most trusted and well-respected
wealth management experts in the United States.
He was accepted to Pace at an age when many of his peers were still freshmen in high school. Mr. Klarberg was 16 years old
when he took his first college class. He immediately embraced the University’s historic mission of Opportunitas and applied
it to his studies and his career. After graduating with his BBA in 1981 he joined Deloitte. Over the next 11 years, he became
the firm’s national director of sports and entertainment. During that period, Mr. Klarberg returned to Pace and earned an MS
in Taxation. He also shared his knowledge and professional expertise with other Pace students as an adjunct professor of
taxation. He would later describe his teaching experience as “one of the most gratifying of my life.”
Mr. Klarberg formed KRT Business Management and spent two years as senior managing director of Guggenheim Partners
before founding Monarch Business and Wealth Management. At Monarch, his roster of clients reads like a “who’s who” of the
sports and entertainment worlds. Those relying on his trusted counsel include a multiple Grammy Award-winning artist, actor,
and businessman; an Academy Award-winning actor; a Golden Globe-winning and Emmy Award-nominated television and
movie star; a National Hockey League Hall-of-Famer; a hip-hop business magnate and fashion designer; and countless other
artists, professional athletes, and high-net-worth individuals. He is also part-owner of three American professional sports
franchises—including the New York Yankees.
His long-standing support for the National Meningitis Association is just one example of his desire to positively impact
people in a very personal and profound way. Mr. Klarberg recently returned to Pace to help future generations of business
people ensure their own futures. As an Executive in Residence and the Lubin School of Business’ first Lecturer in Residence,
he helped students launch fulfilling and successful careers in the industries where he has helped so many others—arts and
entertainment management, sports marketing, and taxation.
For his contributions to education, business, and society, Pace University proudly confers upon Barry Klarberg the degree of
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.

Charles Phillips
Infor CEO Charles Phillips is a marine, lawyer, ex-Morgan Stanley Wall Street MBA, computer programmer, former President
of Oracle, and a self-professed “technology geek.” He carries two different cell phones that run on two different networks,
takes the subway to work most days, answers his own e-mail, encourages employees to instant message him, streams
45,000 songs from his private cloud music server, and loves art, fashion, and design. All these elements of Mr. Phillips’
persona are on display as he creates an innovative organization that is changing the way people work.
Mr. Phillips runs the world’s third largest provider of software applications, but he calls the company “the world’s largest
startup.” As CEO of Infor since 2010, he has led the organization on an impressive voyage of growth and creativity. Four
months after he started, he completed a $2 billion acquisition—the first of many he would make. Infor is the result of more
than 60 acquisitions, and Mr. Phillips’ deft touch has made the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
His success begins with a corporate culture of camaraderie, innovation, and customer focus. His first rule, he said, was “do
not hire anyone who’s not brilliant at what they do.” His second rule was just as important as his first: “Don’t hire anyone
you can’t have dinner with.” He also focused on excellent design and empowered his people to create intuitive, responsive,
and elegant user experiences. To facilitate this process, he created an internal creative agency and hired writers, designers,
developers, and filmmakers, rather than enterprise software developers. “We wanted to make the software beautiful and
inject a social platform into the mix,” he explains. He even named the conference rooms in the office after jazz greats, such
as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, to reflect the collective improvisational nature he wants to permeate the organization.
Today, Infor is a $2.8 billion company offering its 73,000 customers the benefits of a global organization with local
roots. Almost 13,000 employees work in more than 150 offices in 40 different countries to meet their customers’ needs.
These customers include 19 of the top 20 aerospace companies, 84 of the top 100 automakers, the top 10 pharmaceutical
companies, 26 out of the top 35 largest global retailers, 31 out of the top 50 industrial distributors, and more than 7,000
industrial machinery manufacturers. The firm is also focused on developing future business professionals. The Infor
Education Alliance provides talented students and professionals with the software packages, training, hands-on learning
experiences, and groundbreaking technology they’ll need to become leaders in their industries.
Mr. Phillips has been recognized countless times for his business success as well as his philanthropic efforts. His Phillips
Charitable Organization offers support and encouragement to single parents, wounded veterans, and students working
towards engineering science, technology, and mathematics degrees. He is also a member of many corporate and nonprofit
boards, and served on US President Barack Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. He earned a BS in Computer
Science from the United States Air Force Academy and a JD from New York Law School.
For his contributions to business and society, Pace University proudly confers upon Charles Phillips the degree of Doctor
of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.

Honorary Degree Citation
Doctor of Humane Letters
General Charles C. Krulak
Commandant of the US Marine Corps, a former Chairman and CEO of MBNA Europe Bank Ltd, and President of BirminghamSouthern College. While leadership is not conferred through titles, there can be no doubt that General Charles C. Krulak is a
leader’s leader and a man deeply committed to service.
In 2011, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps working towards a Master of Strategic Studies degree at the US Army
War College submitted a strategic research project entitled, “Why General Krulak is the Marine Corps’ Greatest Strategic
Leader.” The Lieutenant Colonel wrote, “General Krulak successfully guided the Marine Corps into the 21st century through
his unparalleled vision for the future, his highly effective communication abilities, and a political and social savvy.” He added,
“Krulak’s unique ability to embrace innovation and establish an experimental environment throughout the Marine Corps set
the tone for other leaders in the Marine Corps to follow suit.”
General Krulak’s leadership philosophy is simple. Leadership starts with an abundance of selflessness. “You can’t care
who gets the credit,” he says. Great moral courage is the second arrow in the General’s leadership quiver. He defines moral
courage as the willingness to take action when something is wrong without regard for the personal consequences. Complete
integrity is the General’s third and final leadership component. “Integrity is the only thing we really own,” he says. “Only we
can give it away and once we do, we can’t get it back.”
The General developed his leadership skills during a 35-year career in the US Marine Corps, ending as Commandant and
member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During his military service his nation awarded him countless decorations including the
Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star Medal, three Bronze Star medals with Combat “V,” two Purple Heart
medals, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
General Krulak’s subsequent role as Chief Executive Officer of MBNA Europe proved his leadership principles apply equally
to the business world. And, in 2011, when he became President of a small but fine liberal arts college, Birmingham-Southern
in Alabama, he did so knowing full well the financial challenges the college faced. His leadership philosophy and ability
to inspire ordinary people to do extraordinary things revitalized the college. Retiring this June, General Krulak leaves his
successor a stable, growing institution.
For his service to his country, and his contributions to education, business, and society, Pace University proudly confers
upon General Charles C. Krulak the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.

Academic Regalia
The history of academic dress dates back to the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required all “Doctors,
Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra to wear gowns. In England, during the second half of the 14th century,
the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. It is still a question
whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. Gowns may have been worn for warmth
in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars, while hoods seem to have served to cover the tonsured head until
replaced by the skull cap. In time, the skull cap was replaced by the mortarboard caps that are used widely today.
In 1895, the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume was formed to establish a suitable code of academic dress for the
colleges and universities of the United States. The academic costume code recognizes three types of gowns, usually black.
The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree has long, closed sleeves with the
arc of a circle near the bottom. A doctor’s gown is faced with velvet, and has full, round, open sleeves bearing three bars of
velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing and bars may either be black or the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree

University, the official colors found in the hood are blue and gold. Colored velvet or velveteen binds the hood and indicates

Graduation Pledge of Social and
Environmental Responsibility
“I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of the
choices I make in my daily life as well as in any job I consider. I will try to improve these aspects
at home and with any organization for which I work.”
The Class of 2015 is the seventh class at Pace University to participate in the Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental
Responsibility. An initiative first instituted at Pace in 2009, individuals wearing a green ribbon have voluntarily pledged to
make a commitment to be socially and environmentally aware of the decisions and choices they make. Students who have
pledged take part in a global effort to actively pursue solutions for a sustainable world—meeting the needs of today without
compromising the needs of the future.
The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility began in 1987 at Humboldt State University (HSU) in Arcata,
California, by a small group of students and community members, ultimately leading to the formation of the Graduation
Pledge Alliance. The Graduation Pledge Alliance is currently coordinated by the Bentley University Alliance for Ethics and
Social Responsibility in Waltham, Massachusetts. Since its inception, more than 300 colleges and universities around the
world have instituted the pledge at some level.

Traditional Symbols
In addition to the regalia and finery customarily worn by University faculty and officers, formal academic ceremonies often
include colorful signs and symbols representing the history and traditions of university life as well as specific aspects of the
university being celebrated.
FLAGS
At Pace University ceremonies, in addition to the flags of the United States, the state of New York, and of the University, the
president is represented by a swallow-tail flag of a blue field with a gold border bearing the University seal in pale blue, ringed
by the inscription “Office of the President.”
Each school/college within the University (College of Health Professions, Seidenberg School of Computer Science and
Information Systems, the School of Education, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, Lubin School of Business, and the School
of Law) is signified by a blue and gold banner with the school/college name and University logo.
MACES
The mace was developed as an armor-crushing weapon in the 13th century. Battle axes and maces were formidable chivalric
tools of combat and warfare. They became symbols of authority, commanding attention and respect for the bearer, and were
associated with those responsible for protecting the king’s person. By the 16th century, maces were ornately designed and
decorated with jewels and precious metals, often crafted with elegant architectural motifs.
At Pace University, the dean for students carries two maces. One is a replica of a Gothic battle mace with a head formed by
five flanges, topped by a fluted conical finial. The rondel consists of a rusticated wood shaft attached to a metal cylindrical
base, all of which is brass plated and inscribed with the words Pace University. The mace was introduced in 1968 at the first
commencement held on the Westchester Campus. The second mace was first used in 1927 at commencement exercises of
Good Counsel College, which became the College of White Plains and which was consolidated in 1975 with Pace University.
The brass and wood mace is topped by a sphere and a formée cross with a garnet at its center. The rondel, consisting of two
brass sections separated by a ribbed wooden grip, has a sphere at its base, which bears the inscription “Pace University.”
University marshals carry batons that represent the schools/colleges of the University. The University seal is mounted on each
end of the baton, which is made of American walnut. The name of each person who has served as dean of the school/college
is engraved on a brass plate affixed to the school/college baton.
VERGE
The verge, an elongated mace or staff carried by the grand marshal, is made of Honduran rosewood. It is topped by a replica
of a bronze-coated copper globe made in 1510, which is the earliest existing representation depicting the discoveries of
Christopher Columbus in the Western Hemisphere. Beneath the globe, each Pace campus is represented by ribbons of the
campus color: green for New York City, blue for Westchester, and red for White Plains. The upper section of the shaft is inlaid
with rare woods representing the four reaches of the world: ebony, teak, olive, and oak.
THE CENTENNIAL MEDALLION (RETIRED)
(The medallion was struck in commemoration of the University’s Centennial in 2006.) Both the Chairman of the Board of
Trustees and the University President wore the Centennial Medallion, which is made of bronze and layered with silver plate.
The face of the medallion is the Pace University seal and the reverse bears the engraved image of the Centennial mark.
THE CENTENNIAL STAFF
The University president carries an ornate staff that was crafted in 2006 to commemorate the University’s Centennial.
The Centennial Medallion set in brass tops the staff, which is almost six feet in height and made of solid wood.
The presidential flag, verge, and school/college batons were designed by John Mulgrew, Professor of Fine Arts.
The Centennial staff and school/college banners were designed by David Grupper.
The Centennial staff was crafted by Michael Fayed, Master Wood Turner.
