Catalan 1. Course presentation The goal of this course is to introduce the students to translation: identifying the main difficulties and knowing how to face them. Working with the Catalan, Spanish and English languages, the students will face different types of translations, the main problems of the translation process and the tools and strategies that can be used to solve them. 2. Competencies to be attained ●
Situation analysis and problem solving (G2): ○ Identifying and solving the main problems (linguistic, cultural and pragmatic) in translation ○ Using the most efficient translation strategies and techniques in each case. ●
Application of knowledge into practice (G17): ○ Recognising the most distinctive features of each translation variety. ○ Identifying the different stages of the translation process ○ Knowing how to use the basic translation backing tools (lexicographic, documental...) ●
Ability to reflect on the knowledge of translation (S10): ○ Analysing the traductological phenomena from a linguistic approach. ○ Knowing how to analyse the traductological phenomena from the translation assignment approach. ○ Being able to explain the chosen techniques and strategies. 3. The reassessment exam will be similar. In order to pass the course, the mark of the exam must be at least 5 out of 10. 5. Methodology: training activities In the plenary sessions: ● The teacher will give theoretical and methodological guidance for translation with examples in ●
the following language pairs: Spanish­Catalan, Catalan­Spanish, English­Catalan and English­Spanish. The students will have to do exercises (documentation, reformulation, translation problem solving, etc.). ● Together the students will translate short texts of different types and genres and we will comment on the translation in class. The seminars will be focused on the reviewing and commentary of several texts that the students will have translated previously. During the first weeks the students will translate Spanish into Catalan and vice versa, and then they will change to translation from English into the student's native languages. 6.
