Course presentation The course's goal is to describe the contemporary use and prescriptive rules of the Spanish language through the description and study of its most relevant aspects. The course will address descriptive and prescriptive issues of both the oral and written expression by way of the comprehension and analysis of samples from oral and written discourses. As listed in the general syllabus, one of the prerequisites for taking this course is to have the Spanish language level attained at the end of high school or equivalent (a level B2+/C1 from the Common European Framework of Reference is advised). 2. Competencies to be attained Upon completing the bachelor's degree a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: − − Ability to analyse and synthesise (G.1): ● Identifying and knowing the characteristics and operation of the most common oral and written registers of the Spanish varieties (Peninsular and Latin American) ● Analysing and systematically arranging the operation of the linguistic units in the text (statement, linguistic and extralinguistic context) and judging the communicative efficiency. Documentary and research sources search (G.4): Knowing and appropriately using the sources of reference in language use (key descriptive grammars, dictionaries in use, prescriptive dictionaries, digital corpus, etc.) − Oral communication in one’s own and foreign languages (G.10): ● Summarising reference linguistic descriptions both orally and in writing in one's own languages. ● Successfully producing different types of academic discourses: summaries, expository and argumentative texts (analysis, bibliographic reviews, explanation of problems, oral presentations). − − − Team work and individual work skills (G.13): ● Using previous knowledge as the starting point in any learning activity. ● Using learning tools: notes, reference books, technologies, etc. Application of knowledge into practice (G.17): ● Knowing and applying correction and appropriateness criteria of oral and written productions according to the different registers and genres of the PanHispanic Spanish. ● Identifying consistency, cohesion, appropriateness and prescriptive mistakes in Panhispanic Spanish written compositions. ● Explaining the consistency, cohesion, appropriateness and prescriptive mistakes in the texts seen in class according to the explanations and readings of the course. ● Mastering the linguistic criteria related to spelling, morphological, syntactic, lexical and discursive aspects. Autonomous and continuous learning skills (G.20): ● Individually designing a learning plan and reach the goals of the course and the plenary sessions, adjusted to one's own characteristics and style. ● Collaborating with fellow students (in both the plenary session and seminars) in order to achieve the intended goals according to the learning plan suggested in class. ● Actively taking part in the group production and commentary of texts. Specific competencies − − − Excellence in the written and oral proficiency of the native language(s) (S.1): ● Mastering the linguistic prescription issues dealt with in class. ● Creating consistent and cohesive texts appropriated to the communicative situation. ● Correcting the consistency, cohesion, appropriateness and prescriptive mistakes in one's written compositions pointed out by the teaching staff. ● Accurately writing the linguistic prescription issues dealt with in class. ● Critically interpreting the meaning of oral discourses and diverse writings. Ability to reflect on the operation of language (S.9): ● Establishing functional associations between grammatical structures and discursive structures. ● Achieving the grammatical concepts required for a reflexive use of language consistent with that of a competent speaker. ● Formulating basic grammatical analyses and reasoning backed by reference books. ● Analysing grammatical constructions and mechanisms regarding the textual properties. ● Explaining the lexical meaning and form in both the system and the discourse. Ability to search and manage information and documentation (S.12) ● Handling the appropriate materials and search sources to solve prescriptive issues. ● Handling the appropriate materials and search sources to work on lexical and grammatical issues. ● Handling the appropriate materials and search sources to produce and analyse texts. ● Carrying out linguistic searches in electronic corpus. 3. Contents First term Module 1: Language in use. The text and its context. Norm and variation. Module 2: The lexical component. Morphology, lexicology and semantics. Lexical cohesion. Module 3: Word classes’ grammar. Grammar and text. Nominal group and verbal group. Second term Module 4: Sentential and suprasentential grammar. Mode and modality. The informative functions. Oral language and written language. Module 5: Text and grammar. Reference and deixis. Connection and discourse marker. Module 6: Text types and speech genres. Argumentation. 4. Evaluation and reassessment The global evaluation of the course is the sum of the mark of the activities done during the two terms and the marks of both the midterm exam (December) and the final exam (March). It is mandatory to do two exercises on reference readings and two assignments linked to the seminars. The worth of each evaluating activity is the following: Exercises on reference readings: 20 % Assessable assignments: 40 % Exams: 40% It is mandatory to have an average of 5 or higher in both the exams and the seminar assessable assignments in order to pass the course. A non submitted evaluation activity will get a mark of 0; this mark will not prevent the student from doing the reassessment. It is mandatory to sit for the two exams of the course in order to be able to do the reassessment: it is necessary to sit for both December and March exams. The course reassessment will be done during the month of July, within the exams calendar that the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting sets. The reassessment of the course is done by means of an exam accounting for the 100 % of the mark.
