Course presentation In this subject we will work on the problems and difficulties in journalistic translation, from a specific approach: translation of text that in the source language deal with the target reader's reality (translations similar to the "Courrier International") The dense present situation in Catalonia related to the "procés" (or "separatist challenge) and the everyday more intense follow up that France and the other French speaking countries do about it, presents a good opportunity 2. Competencies to be attained: Upon completing the degree programme a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: Competencies (both general and specific of the programme) Evaluation goals or learning outcomes G2: Situation analysis and problem solving Identifying comprehension and reexpression problems and linguistic or cultural divergences. Applying the appropriate strategies and techniques in each case in order to solve these problems. G8: Organization and planning G13: Team work and individual work skills Properly organizing the work stages of individual and group translations and correctly managing time S1: Proficiency in the written command of the native language S2: Receptive proficiency in the foreign language S4: Knowledge of the foreign culture S6: Ability to translate texts owing to the thematic field. Writing linguistically correct texts in Spanish that express the same contents as the source text, according tot he instructions in the translation order Understanding both generally and in detail texts in French on diverse topics and of different text types. Spotting and understanding extralinguistic references from the source text's culture ("culturemes") Ability to translate texts (from the second language into Spanish) of advanced difficulty because of cultural, rhetorical and stylistic reasons or because of specificities of the thematic fields. 3. Contents From a traductological standpoint, in this course we will deal with the following content: 1. Interlinguistic comparisons from a macrotextual standpoint. 2. Interlinguistic comparisons from a macrotextual standpoint. 3. Specific text difficulties owing to the specific field The types of texts we will use in this course will also allow us to introduce discursive subjects related to the communicative theory of translation If we take into account the journalism text genre, the texts' and its translations' communicative functions, the diversity of translation strategies, the previous knowledge diversity of the source and target readers... Given that this is an advanced level the translation's professional scope will be very important, beyond the translation itself: correction and edition tasks, use of new technologies, team work ("writing council"), blog publication... 4. Teaching methodology ●
Seminar We will review weekly individual translations of journalism texts. The students will prepare the weekly translations and in class we will review some of them. Two evaluation translations will be submitted: one midterm and the other one by the end of the term. ●
Plenary sessions The plenary sessions have a triple role: Preparation of the individual seminar translations. "Writing advice" choosing and assigning individual translation for the seminars and group translation for the plenary sessions, follow up of the blog editing and publishing. Review of the group translations. The students will be divided in groups and will be responsible for the translation of one text per week and correction of another group's translation. One of the translation and one of the corrections of each group will be randomly selected and evaluated during the semester. ●
Autonomous work, individual or in group, outside of the classroom. The student will prepare individual translations for the seminars as well as group translations and corrections for the plenary sessions. By the end of the term, the students will submit a digital portfolio with the final version of all the assignments submitted during the term. Some students will be responsible for the texts' final editing and some others of its online publishing. 5.
