Course presentation In this course the knowledge on English to Catalan translation analysis and practice will be broaden and the students will approach the professional world. We will study the text types and we will work on rhetorics and stylistics with a translation approach and on the specific difficulties of the texts owing to the thematic field. Besides, we will focus on the macro textual aspects of the process (thematic progression, cohesion and consistency). 2. Competencies to be attained: Upon completing the degree programme a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: G.2. and G.8. Situation analysis and problem solving: knowing how to carry out a difficulties and workload assessment previous to the translation (organization); being able to solve translation problems using the most appropriate strategies and explaining the choice. G.13. Team work and individual work skills: being able to plan and carry out individual and group translation projects (dealing with terminology, unifying translation criteria, creating a style guide). S.1. Excellence in the written and oral proficiency of the native language(s: writing the translation with linguistic and spelling accuracy; having a lexically rich expression appropriate to the context; knowing how to recreate different registers and styles adapted to the text types. S.6. Ability to translate texts of high cultural, rhetorical or stylistic difficulties owing to the thematic field. 3. Contents Knowledge of translation methodology: 1.) Rhetoric and style on the context of translation: problem solving. 2.) Specific text difficulties owing to the specific field: literary texts (novel, drama, assay, etc.) and nonliterary texts (report, biography, dissemination article, etc.). 3.) Interlinguistic comparisons from a macro textual standpoint: a. The sentence as an informative unit: word order, topiccomment structure, topic development, etc. b. Textual cohesion mechanisms (references, repetition, connectors, etc.) 4. Percentage of the final mark Reassessment type 40 % Yes 40 % Alternative short translations 25 % No 25 % Yes 60 % Exam Participation in 10 % No class In order to pass the course the students must submit all the assignments, pass at least two of the three translation tasks and obtain a mark of at least 4 at the exam. Only the students that have submitted all the assignments will be able to do the reassessment in July. 5. Methodology: training activities In the plenary sessions we will combine explanations regarding the program subjects presented every week with the resolution of short activities. The students are expected to attend the plenary sessions with previous preparation of the work that will be reviewed and commented in class. The oral presentation of the group translation assignment will be done at the plenary sessions. This assignment will include an oral and written justification that tackles the following subjects: ● A detailed traductological comment of the translation. The comment must include the contents of the program. ● Parallel text to the one translated. The students will have to show how these texts have helped solving the translation problems of the text. The oral presentation's schedule will be set in the first plenary session. In the seminars the students will work with a texts dossier. It is essential that the students do the pertinent translations before coming to the seminar in order to be able to participate of the review activities regarding the assignments. 6.
