Course presentation In this course the students will learn the specific strategies used in translating humanistic, literary, lawful, economical, scientific and technological texts from Spanish into Catalan. The goal is to spot and solve Spanish to Catalan translation issues from that are yet to be completely solved. In the plenary session we will focus on the analysis and reviews of already existent translations and in the seminars the students will practice translation. 2. Competencies to be attained: This subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ G.2. Situation analysis and problem solving: Detecting writing problems in the original text and solve them in the translation. G.3. Critical thinking: critically explaining (advanced level) the reasons why a translation solution is right or wrong. G.7. Decision making: making the best choice of translation in a specific text (advanced level). G.12. Interpersonal relations skills Presenting and explaining in class a project prepared individually or in a group. G.13. Team work and individual work skills: successfully taking part in preparing a group project involving a critical review of a translation. S1. Excellence in the written and oral proficiency of the native language(s: translating texts between one’s mother tongues with excellence; determining whether the texts available on the publishing market, translated into one’s mother tongue, are efficiently translated or not. E.9. Ability to reflect on the operation of language: being aware of the main interferences between Catalan and Spanish and knowing how to avoid them in one’s own translations. ▪ S.11. Using computer tools applied to linguistic mediation, including a command of machine translation and localisation techniques (S.11: knowing and using machine translation tools for translation between Catalan and Spanish. 3. Translation of audiovisual texts from Spanish into Catalan and the concept of adaptation 4. Translation of literary texts from Spanish into Catalan and analysis of style 5. Translation of journalistic texts from Spanish into Catalan and the processing of neology 6. Translation of specialised texts from Spanish into Catalan and the handling of terminology 7. Judgements and evaluation of translations 8. Tools for machine translation from Spanish into Catalan (use and assessment) 9. Online resources for translation from Spanish into Catalan 4.
