Faculty of Translation and Interpreting Course syllabus Year 20152016 Advanced Translation (CatalanSpanish) (20257) Degree/studies: Bachelor's Degree in Translation and Interpreting Year: fourth Term: first ECTS credits: 4 Student dedication time: 100 hours Course type: Compulsory GG teacher: Laura del Barrio Language of instruction: Spanish and Catalan 1. Course presentation In this course the students will learn the specific strategies used in translating specialised Catalan texts —from several fields such as humanities, literature, law, economics, science, technology, etc.— into Spanish. At the same time, we will review and compare already existing translations from Catalan into Spanish. The general goals are the following: ● Delving into the ability to translate Catalan texts into Spanish from different fields. ● Discussing and explaining several translation alternatives. ● Delving into the knowledge of the translation resources available to professionals: dictionaries (both printed and digital), grammar books, Internet, parallel texts, terminological databases… 2. Competencies to be attained Upon completing the degree programme a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: ● Situation analysis and problem solving (G.2): Detecting writing problems in the original text and solve them in the translation ● Critical reasoning (G.3): critically explaining (advanced level) the reasons why a translation solution is right or wrong ● Decisionmaking (G.7): making the best choice of translation in a specific text (advanced level) ● Interpersonal relations skills (G.12): to present and defend in class a project prepared individually or in group ● Team work and individual work skills (G.13): successfully taking part in preparing a group project involving a critical review of a translation ● Excellence in the written and oral proficiency of the native language(s) (S.1): ● o Proficiency in translating texts between the native languages. o Determining whether the translations available in the literature are excellent or not. Ability to reflect about the operation of language (S.9): being aware of the main interferences between Catalan and Spanish and knowing how to avoid them in one’s own translations ● Using computer tools applied to linguistic mediation, including a command of machine translation and localisation techniques (S.11): knowing and using machine translation tools for translation between Catalan and Spanish 3. Contents Documentary sources for CatalanSpanish translation: dictionaries, grammar books, online resources Translation from Catalan into Spanish: humanistic and literary texts Translation from Catalan into Spanish: scientific and technological texts Translation from Catalan into Spanish: specific nonspecialised texts (advertising, audiovisual, etc.) Delving into advanced norm issues and interferences between Catalan and Spanish 4. Methodology: training activities In the plenary sessions the students will translate different types of texts, will discuss alternative translations and delve into the documentary resources that can be used in solving the issues that these texts arise. In order to appropriately following the sessions, the students must prepare at home the translation assigned every week. The focus of the seminar will be to delve into the specific translation problems, as well as working in the evaluation activities. 6. Basic course bibliography Moliner, María.
