Course presentation This subject addresses strategies for translating specialised texts in the humanistic, literary and scientific spheres. We will analyse the nature of literary texts and in which shape they can adopt. We will delve into every genre (poetry, drama and fiction) and its translation. We will consider the main issues of historicism and interpretation that affect literary translation. 2. Competencies to be attained Upon completing the degree programme a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: G.3. Critical thinking ● Expressing one's opinion with argued, contrasted and consistent ideas based on a preliminary analysis. G.20. Autonomous and continuous learning skills ● Managing one's learning time outside the class in order to achieve the course's goals. S.1. Excellence in the written and oral command of the native language/s. ● Translating literary texts with enough command of the linguistic resources into one's own language(s). S.2. Oral and written receptive proficiency of at least two foreign languages ● Understanding and analysing literary texts in the foreign language and spotting important aspects for translation and cultural comparison. S.5. Specialised knowledge in one or more specific fields ● Having enough knowledge of the foreign language's literature and culture in order to succeed in translating the texts. S.6. Capacity to translate general texts ● Translating humanistic and literary specialised texts at an introductory level. S.10. Ability to reflect on the operation of translation. ● Identifying the important aspects of a literary text in regards to its translation and arguing the decisions regarding a new version as well as evaluating the strategies for one that has already been done. 3. Contents The student will be introduced to the difficulties faced when translating humanistic and literary specialised texts and will have to learn how to reflect on the issues and specific nature of said translation and its different aspects: ● ● Portrayal of the literary text ● Historicism, interpretation and translation of humanistic and literary texts.
