Course presentation In this subject the students will be introduced to the basic notions of translation and will review the main linguistic applications useful for translation. The students will also start the practice of translation and will be introduced to assistance tools. 2. Competencies to be attained Upon completing the degree programme a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following general (G) and specific (S) skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: G.1. Ability to analyse and synthesise ● Anticipating a translation process appropriate to the various modalities, classes and types of translation, regarding the understanding of the original and the reexpression in the target language. G.2. Situation analysis and problem solving ● ● Using the most efficient translation strategies and techniques in each case. Identifying and solving the main problems and difficulties in translation. G.3. Critical thinking ● Identifying the causes behind translation mistakes and knowing how to avoid them. G.17. Application of knowledge into practice ● ● Recognising the most distinctive features of each translation variety. Identifying the most distinctive features of each stage of the translation process. G.18. Recognition and understanding of diversity and multiculturalism ● Being aware of the issues caused by linguistic and cultural diversity. S.10. Ability to reflect on the operation of language ● ● Analysing the traductological phenomena from a linguistic approach. Explaining with the appropriate terminology the traductological decisionmaking processes. 3. Contents 1. Issues caused by the world's linguistic diversity. Possible solutions: constructed languages, international languages, multilingualism and translation and interpreting. 2. Introduction to translatology: the purpose of translation, the actors involved, definitions, essential features and classifying standards. 3. Translation techniques, methods and strategies. 4. The settings of (in)translatability: translation problems and difficulties 5. The translation process: broad sense (socioprofessional approach) and restricted sense (cognitive approach). 6. The lexical frame in translation. 7. The translation error and translation skills. 8. Translating: a textual operation 4.
