Course presentation This is an initiation course to the Catalan Language addressed to those students that come from outside the geographical scope of the Catalan Language and that have no prior knowledge of the language. So the course is conceived for languagesensitive students that have never studied Catalan before. The work on oral and written comprehension will allow this type of students to normally pursue their education in this university and will be qualified to translate from this language. 2. Competencies to be attained Upon completing the degree programme a host of skills should be attained and this subject addresses the following skills defined in the form of learning outcomes: ● Understanding and production of oral and written academic texts in the Catalan language (being able to understand an academic text and to write a brief review of it) ● Recognition and understanding of cultural diversity and multiculturalism (being able to compare, orally and in writing, Catalan cultural traditions with one's own): ● Mastering at least two foreign languages: being able to understand oral and written texts in academic environments and to summarise their content. ● Ability to reflect on the operation of language: being able to recognise and to explain the main grammatical and pragmatical differences between Catalan and Spanish. 3. Methodology: training activities The teaching process direction is based on a abilitycenterd approach in which all the activites that the student carries out are stressed. The goal is to expose the students to certain situations and educational resources that require the execution of specific tasks and the analysis of increasingly complex texts from an integrated perspective. The teachinglearning activity is structured by way of the following educational guidelines: The teacher will present the planned Catalan language description aspects in the plenary sessions. The group will also work on the implementation and assimilation of these descriptions by means of exercises such as: oral and written comprehension exercises, inference of vocabulary and prescriptive rules of grammar exercises, assisted writing (fill in the blanks kind of exercises about dialogues and short texts, etc.), translation exercises, etc. In the seminars conceived as interactive work sessions between the students and the teacher the students will execute specific tasks based on the descriptions seen in the plenary sessions; this will allow the teachers to encourage more efficiently the active involvement of the students. The exercises will be similar to the above mentioned ones. In the seminars the students will go through and discuss all the work done outside the classroom. 6.
