Correspondence to the Delta Report should be sent to the president Barb Brunt via email at [email protected] Sigma Theta Tau, International www.nursingsociety.org Delta Omega http://www.uakron.edu/nursing/about-us/stti Delta Omega has had a busy year beginning with our chapter induction ceremony in April. Dr. Lori Kidd and Dina Dornack did a wonderful job with the plans and subsequent ceremony held in the Student Union at The University of Akron. In the weeks that followed we also celebrated Nurses’ Week by providing awards and monetary gifts to the selected nurses at local hospitals. Those nurses biographies appear later in the newsletter. Thank you to all who made these celebrations a success. As our 2015 deadline approaches for the implementation of electronic healthcare information, there has been some confusion in the general public with how electronic medical records (EMR) and electronic health records (EHR) differs. Here are some quick and easy answers the next time you are questioned by a patient and/or family member about those differences. EMR are a digital version of the paper charts in your clinician’s office. It contains the medical treatment history of patients in a single practice. The advantage over HER is – it tracks data over Page 1 Summer 2013 THE DELTA REPORT time, easily identifies which patients are due for preventive screenings or checkups, checks how their patients are doing on certain parameters and monitors and improves overall quality of care in the practice. This information usually stays within the practice. In the event of a sudden hospital admission, this information needs to be printed out and faxed/mailed to the facility. This system is comparable to the paper system. EHR does all of the above in addition to other things. It focuses on the total health of the patient – going beyond standard clinical data collected in the clinician’s office. They are built to share information with other healthcare providers, such as other specialists, testing laboratories, to include all members of the health care team involved in the patient’s total care. Essentially the information moves with the patient . . . either to another health care facility, nursing home, and next state or across the country. Information is shared through the various modalities engaged by an individual; the information can be accessed by the individuals themselves. Even though there is only one word difference between EMR and EHR, the information contained in these two records makes a world of difference. Share this with your patients the next time they question what all this information means. Submitted by Kathy Rose, RN, MSN President, Delta Omega Chapter, STTI THE 2013 SIGMA THETA TAU INTERNATIONAL DELTA OMEGA BALLOT CONGRATULATIONS to the newly elected Board Members of the Delta Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau!!!! With just over 100 votes the election was a great success. Thank you for voting! What is the benefit of EHR? All members of the health care team have ready access to the latest information allowing for more coordinated, patient-centered care. The information gathered by the PCP alerts the emergency department clinician about the patient’s lifethreatening allergy, even if the patient is unconscious. Patients can log onto their own health care record and see trends in lab results over the past year, which can help motivate clients to comply with medication regimens. Immediate results from lab tests already in the record tell the specialists what they need to know without duplicate testing. Recent discharge documentation from a hospital stay informs what the discharge instructions and follow-up instructions contain making transition from one facility to another easier.
