Delta Omega Spring Program Delta Omega’s Spring Program Wednesday, April 30, 2014 Summa Health System Akron City Hospital Delta Omega’s Spring 2014 program, “Research Updates” featured six outstanding speakers covering three independent research projects, two of which received research funding from our chapter. The turnout for the program was wonderful with 33 nurses and students in attendance. The first program topic was Asthma Knowledge, Control and Self-Management of adults at an urban university, presented by Carolyn Sutter DNP, RN, Page 5 CNP. Dr. Sutter is an Associate Instructor in the Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Track in the College of Health Professions, School of Nursing at the University of Akron. Her research originated from her experiences as a Nurse Practitioner and her coursework on her Doctor of Nursing Practice. Meghan M. Weese, MSN, RN, CPN and Jennifer J. Huth BSN, RN, CPN were our second speakers, presenting on their research Identifying Mentoring Practices that Predict Mentoring Benefits among Pediatric Nurses. Meghan Weese is the Magnet Coordinator at Akron Children’s Hospital and Jennifer Huth is the Craniofacial Coordinator at Akron Children’s Hospital. Both researchers have been involved in the topic of mentoring for several years and have presented on mentoring practices at national and local research conferences. The third program topic was APN Care Delivery to Non-Offending Caregivers of Child Sexual Abuse Victims presented by Sheau-Huey Chiu, PhD, RN, Maryhelen Kreidler, EdD, RN, CNS and Karen Fitzgerald, MSN, PPCNP-BC, PMHS. All three researchers are faculty in the College of Health Professions, School of Nursing at the University of Akron. Dr. Chiu is an Assistant Professor, Mrs. Fitzgerald is an Associate Instructor and Dr. Kreidler is a Professor. These three researchers brought their individual expertise to this study and collaborated on their unique program designed to reach out to non-offending caregivers through the use of texting reminders and individual meetings. The evaluations of the program were overwhelmingly positive. One particular comment summed up the program very well: “This was the best presentation of active research by nurses in our community. Thank you for this opportunity to attend.” We are very thankful to Carolyn, Meghan, Jennifer, Sheau-Chiu, Maryhelen, and Karen for sharing their expertise and to Summa Health System Akron City Hospital for co-sponsoring this program. Revised research and EBP proposal guidelines are working out well. These are in line with those of Sigma Theta Tau International (proposal guidelines, electronic submission of proposals, formalized institutional routing of proposal funding, involvement of awardees in chapter activities, etc.) 2. Reviewed the one proposal submitted in September and selected it for funding a. Ann-Marie Brown, PhD( c), RN: A Comparison of Two Gastric Feeding Methods in Mechanically Ventilated Critically Ill Children 3. Recognized researchers and co-investigators (2 groups) at the April Induction Ceremony. Representative from each group briefly addressed the audience and new chapter members. 6. Received 14 of nominations for awards and selected seven recipients for excellence in nursing awards and initiated nominations for contributions to chapter awards (2). 7.
