Delta Omega’s Spring Program
Wednesday, April 30, 2014
Summa Health System Akron City Hospital
Delta Omega’s Spring 2014 program, “Research
Updates” featured six outstanding speakers
covering three independent research projects, two of
which received research funding from our chapter.
The turnout for the program was wonderful with 33
nurses and students in attendance.
The first program topic was Asthma Knowledge,
Control and Self-Management of adults at an urban
university, presented by Carolyn Sutter DNP, RN,
Page 5
CNP. Dr. Sutter is an Associate Instructor in the
Adult/Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Track in the
College of Health Professions, School of Nursing at
the University of Akron. Her research originated
from her experiences as a Nurse Practitioner and her
coursework on her Doctor of Nursing Practice.
Meghan M. Weese, MSN, RN, CPN and Jennifer J.
Huth BSN, RN, CPN were our second speakers,
presenting on their research Identifying Mentoring
Practices that Predict Mentoring Benefits among
Pediatric Nurses. Meghan Weese is the Magnet
Coordinator at Akron Children’s Hospital and
Jennifer Huth is the Craniofacial Coordinator at
Akron Children’s Hospital. Both researchers have
been involved in the topic of mentoring for several
years and have presented on mentoring practices at
national and local research conferences.
The third program topic was APN Care Delivery to
Non-Offending Caregivers of Child Sexual Abuse
Victims presented by Sheau-Huey Chiu, PhD, RN,
Maryhelen Kreidler, EdD, RN, CNS and Karen
Fitzgerald, MSN, PPCNP-BC, PMHS. All three
researchers are faculty in the College of Health
Professions, School of Nursing at the University of
Akron. Dr. Chiu is an Assistant Professor, Mrs.
Fitzgerald is an Associate Instructor and Dr.
Kreidler is a Professor. These three researchers
brought their individual expertise to this study and
collaborated on their unique program designed to
reach out to non-offending caregivers through the
use of texting reminders and individual meetings.
The evaluations of the program were overwhelmingly
positive. One particular comment summed up the
program very well:
“This was the best presentation of active research by
nurses in our community. Thank you for this
opportunity to attend.”
We are very thankful to Carolyn, Meghan, Jennifer,
Sheau-Chiu, Maryhelen, and Karen for sharing their
expertise and to Summa Health System Akron City
Hospital for co-sponsoring this program.

Committee: Leadership Succession
Submitted by: Carolyn Sutter and Elizabeth
Good, Co-Chairs
Goals for 2013-2014:
1. Continue the Leadership Intern/Extern
program. This year we had two interns
(Jessica Mikelait and Brittany Sanford) and
two externs (Gail Beriswill and Aaron
Harding). They all attended board meetings
and worked on various projects throughout
the year. Jessica and Brittany were
recognized for their outstanding contributions
to the chapter at the Induction/Awards
ceremony
2. Prepare the ballot for the upcoming year.
The ballot was prepared and was distributed
to members via email. There was at least one
candidate for all open positions.
Goals for 2014-2015:
Page 8
1. Formally evaluate the intern/extern program
and make any revisions needed based on
their feedback.
2. Continue to recruit and encourage nurses to
apply for membership as nurse leaders
3. Seek candidates from a variety of
positions/organizations for ballot – mentor
two new members to prepare them to
assume committee leadership next year

Committee Activities:
1. Revised research and EBP proposal
guidelines are working out well. These are
in line with those of Sigma Theta Tau
International (proposal guidelines, electronic
submission of proposals, formalized
institutional routing of proposal funding,
involvement of awardees in chapter
activities, etc.)
2. Reviewed the one proposal submitted in
September and selected it for funding
a. Ann-Marie Brown, PhD( c), RN: A
Comparison of Two Gastric Feeding
Methods in Mechanically Ventilated
Critically Ill Children
3. Reviewed the one proposal submitted in
February and selected it for funding:
a. Carolyn Scotto, PhD/UA and Carolyn
Murrock, PhD/UA: Feasibility of a
Home Self-Monitoring System to
Describe Exercise and Dietary
Adherence in Cardiac Rehabilitation
Patients
Summer 2014
THE DELTA
REPORT

4. Used electronic newsletter, Face book, and
email blasts to members as ways to
disseminate information about committee’s
work and call for proposals/nominations
5. Recognized researchers and co-investigators
(2 groups) at the April Induction Ceremony.
Representative from each group briefly
addressed the audience and new chapter
members.
6. Received 14 of nominations for awards and
selected seven recipients for excellence in
nursing awards and initiated nominations for
contributions to chapter awards (2).
7. Recognized recipients at the April Induction
Ceremony, and each briefly addressed the
audience and new chapter members
Goals for 2013-2014:
1. Streamline work of serving on this
committee
a. Online dissemination and review of
proposals
i. All September and February
submissions, disseminations, and
reviews were electronic
b. Increase committee participation of
members who are based in hospitals
i. One new committee member is
based at Akron Children’s
Hospital
c. Increase committee participation of
members with DNP
i. One new committee member has
a DNP/UA
2. Publish at least 2 research/evidence-based
practice based articles in Chapter Newsletter
a. Report by undergraduate students,
who went to China May 2013 and
received support from the chapter,
was published in newsletter.
Students also presented at a board
meeting.
Page 9
b. Research outcomes report by M.
Weese, who received research
funding in fall 2012, was published
in the newsletter.
c. Announcements about committee
work, e.g., calls for proposals, calls
for nominations, awards, etc., were
published in newsletter, as well as
disseminated on chapter face book
page and on UA College of Health
Professions announcement monitor.
3. Conduct reviews of EBP proposals
a. EBP proposal guidelines were
distributed on chapter website, but
there were no EBP submissions, in
spite of multiple calls for EBP
proposals.
4. Re-evaluate effectiveness of revised
guidelines
a. Research proposals were in line with
guidelines and complete, thereby
making review of proposals easier
and more efficient.
5. Increase number of proposals and
nominations
a. Only two research proposals were
submitted (one in September and one
in February), and both were funded.
This low number resulted despite at
least three waves of calls for
proposals.
b. Number of recognition nominations
was increased from six in 2012-2013
to fourteen in 2013-2014. Will now
make nomination review process
totally electronic (probably
Qualtrics), based on difficulties
associated with review of emailed
attached documents.
Goals for 2014-2015:
1. Continue to increase committee membership
from hospitals
2. Continue increased efforts to get more
research and EBP proposals
3. Maintain gains of increased nominations
Summer 2014
THE DELTA
