In my welcoming remarks I commented on the relevance of the Sir Edmund Hillary Programme to the directions I see for the future of our University and its important role in the community. All round excellence, personal growth and leadership are the platforms the programme is founded upon and are indeed the essence of true scholarship. In many ways, as inaugural Hillary scholars, you are establishing a benchmark for all of our students as well as for future scholars. The University of Waikato has an important role to play in the development of culture and business in our region. The University can be a forerunner to progress and research development. It can provide community leadership influencing both family and business. The Hillary Programme has strengthened the links to community organisations, to sports, to business and to schools. In the final analysis a University’s quality is determined by the achievements of its graduates. This programme is designed to prepare you to be successful in what ever you undertake in the future. Through the partnerships we have established, and the support that is made available, you represent our investment into the future of the region and the future of the University. I join with Sir Edmund Hillary in his initial welcome in our last newsletter, by wishing you every success. Professor Roy Crawford Vice Chancellor Hillary Scholars Orientation Dean Armstrong 20 March was Orientation Day for Hillary Scholars at the Wel Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts. The afternoon started with Margaret Henshaw and Peter Denham providing a careers and study skills workshop. Then scholars were joined by their families and the Hillary Programme sporting/arts partners. Professor Roy Crawford, Vice Chancellor of the University of Waikato, welcomed the Scholars and their families and provided an opening address. The Hillary Scholars then introduced themselves and spoke briefly about their personal goals before being presented with a Hillary Scholar Shirt. Dean plays the position of Goal Keeper in Hockey for the University Club and the Midland Express team in the National League. He is in his final year studying towards a PhD with the Computer Science Department. He not only competes at representative level in Hockey but also coaches teams. He has recently returned from a New Zealand Goal Keeper camp where he spent an intense three days with the best keepers in the country working on their skills and fitness for the upcoming season. Dean started playing Hockey 15 years ago, he originally wanted to play soccer but at the time it was not offered at his school. Dean hopes to complete his PhD at the end of 2006 and represent New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. To achieve his goals Dean will work extremely hard putting in hours upon hours of reading, writing, researching for his PhD and the same again in games and training, to reach the New Zealand team for the 2008 Olympics. The orienteering and team skills of the Hillary Scholars were tested as they completed the University orienteering course, including some tricky tasks such as raft building. The winning team comprised of Craig Armstrong (Hockey), Andrea Dance(Touch), Paul Hartley (Rowing) and Natalie Curtis (Shooting). While the scholars ran around the course the sports/arts partners and families were taken on a tour of the campus led by Geoff Balme, the University’s Chief Operating Officer. After running around the entire University campus the scholars were always going to be hungry so an awesome barbeque was put on and judging by the small amount left everyone enjoyed the food. The partnership is based on the St Peters unique equestrian facilities and expertise. While equestrian is a traditional strength of the Waikato region, it is one of the most difficult sports in which to maintain activity in parallel with academic study at tertiary level. The partnership allows Hillary Scholars access to the Schools facilities while they study at University of Waikato and to act as mentors for St Peter’s students. The programme also offers St Peter’s students the option of continuing their equestrian training at the School when they move on to tertiary study at the University. Y CM MY CY CMY K The Sir Edmund Hillary Programme Who can apply? • Students who excel academically and in sports or creative and performing arts With the range of other activities at St Peters that link strongly with the Sir Edmund Hillary Programme we see the potential for developing a number of pathways with the University for the benefit of our exceptional students. • School leavers • Current Tertiary students Kay Hogan BHSI St Peters Equestrian Coordinator What do you receive? Jisun Kim Jisun has been playing the Cello since she was about 11 years old which by her own admissions is a late start. She loves the full rich sound of the Cello and hopes to teach the instrument to others in the future. But for now Jisun is focused on completing her degree and playing with a chamber group. Jisun believes it’s not about how much time you spend practicing the Cello but it’s about quality, you need to listen to the sound you are making and refine it. Recently, Jisun has been focusing on her chamber music for Cello and she has excelled, last year being chosen to play at the high achiever's concert for the Royal Schools grade exam in performance music. Jisun loves to perform to a crowd, “even after I have practised a piece a hundred times by myself it feels totally different in front of the crowd, it’s awesome”. Strengthening Creative and Performing Arts Arts Waikato recognises the potential of the University of Waikato Hillary Programme for retaining the best creative talent in the region. This is vital for cultural growth in our community and for the development of innovative business and creative enterprise. In our view the programme can make a significant contribution to strengthening the creative and performing arts. Arts Waikato provides a community interface to ensure that the arts sector is connected, involved and able to share the benefits of the programme. • Full fees Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship to study at Waikato University • Personalised academic support • Leading coaches/tutors in your area of sports/arts • Life skills and personal development coaching • Free gym membership • and more... Hilary Falconer Chief Executive, Arts Waikato Scholarship programme strengthens Rugby academies Sir Edmund Hillary Programme The Hillary Programme has given another dimension to the academy development model launched for Waikato Rugby in 2005. The model is based on a Central Scottwood Group Rugby Academy and for Draft Groups for nurturing younger players. Hillary Scholars can be members of either depending on their level, as is the case with the 2005 scholars. The Central Draft Group, based at the University of Waikato under our Hillary Programme Agreement, includes the most promising high school players as well as Hillary Scholars who are a step away from WRU High Performance Academy level, but are top level all-round performers. The University of Waikato Central Academy forms a key part of the WRU academy programme. Members have access to University facilities, and are able to familiarise themselves with future career development as well as rugby development opportunities. The Waikato Rugby Union see the Hillary Programme as enhancing the potential for young Waikato players to plan their sporting and academic development in a more structured environment, and ultimately to raise the standard of competition in the region through retention of players in the sport and in the Waikato. There are two sessions available to scholars, the first focusing on speed/endurance and the second on core/flexibility and rehabilitation work. Group training is designed to complement the scholar’s own training and it provides them with a chance to train with other scholars. The sessions have shown a lot of scholars new ways to train and allowed scholars to identify areas they need to improve.
