inspiring excellence, all round development and leadership
Reach New Heights
“With the end of the year approaching it is an
appropriate time to reflect on what you have
achieved to date, and what you need to do to put the
final stamp on 2005.
I hope that the programme has challenged you to
reach new heights and that all your efforts will be
rewarded in the final outcomes for the year. As the
inaugural Sir Edmund Hillary Scholars, you will hold
a special place in the history of the programme.
For those who are leaving the University to go on to
new challenges, I wish you well. Continue to strive
for excellence in everything that you undertake, we
will watch your progress with anticipation.
For everyone else, learn from 2005, take fresh
inspiration from what you have achieved. Set
your goals for 2006 with renewed determination
and confidence.”

Leadership Personal
Purpose Workshop
Professor Mike Pratt, the Dean of
Wa i k a t o M a n a g e m e n t S c h o o l ,
presents Personal Purpose, the first
of three workshops available to
Hillary Scholars over their period of
study at Waikato.
To be an inspirational leader, you first need
to know who you are, and where you are going.
This workshop is designed to help you create
a personal purpose that will enable you to challenge yourself to create
an inspirational future and to become the best that you can be.
Mike Pratt has taught this process for creating a Personal Purpose to
thousands of senior business leaders around the world to create their future.
He consults to New Zealand and international businesses and organisations,
including Fortune 500 companies. Mike looks forward to sharing his ideas and
expertise with the Hillary Scholars.
Thank you to Partners
Sir Edmund Hillary
Programme Partners
As this is the last newsletter for the year I would like to acknowledge the contribution of our partners,
and supporters in establishing the programme and getting it off to such a good start this year.
Building partnerships to create opportunities for scholars and to involve the community in delivery
is a fundamental principle of the Programme. The networks that have been established through the
programme to schools, to sporting and arts organisations, to local government and to the business
community are extensive. The range of partnerships continues to grow, from national to regional
level and on an individual activity basis. The nature of the partnerships also varies between sports
and the arts. It is a unique feature of the programme that will continue to add value for the University
and the scholars in new ways as the programme develops. Behind each partnership there is also
another level of contacts and supporters that will become more important as awareness and
understanding of the value of the programme and its potential to foster the development of future
leaders expands. The partnerships that have been highlighted in previous newsletters demonstrate
the range of different models that have evolved and we will continue to outline specific partnership
models next year.
We also acknowledge the support that we have had from Sport Waikato, Hamilton Community Arts
Council, Arts and Cultural Unit of Hamilton City Council, NZ Secondary Schools Sports Council, local
business leaders and key staff in the University of Waikato.
The Hillary Programme is an exciting initiative for the Waikato. Please use it to promote both the
University of Waikato and the Waikato.

Deconstructing
Alice Dee
The very curious Alice Dee enters a world inhabited
by her greatest desires and her greatest fears; a
world where chaos rules and nothing seems to make
sense, nothing except a beautiful song. Has Alice
stepped into a nightmare or a dream? Can she find
her way through and what will she learn from the
experience: will she stay on the ground or will she
learn to fly? Alice encounters many interesting
characters, always under the thrall or the threat of
the great ego, The Queen.
A multi-disciplinary, multi-media, stage production based
(very) loosely on Lewis Carroll’s timeless classic Alice in
Wonderland; written, directed and performed by students of
Waikato University’s inaugural Sir Edmund Hillary scholarship.
Performances at the WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing
Arts on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 September at 6pm.
