Hillary Scholarship Programme March 2006 i n spirin g e x ce l l e nce , a l l ro u n d dev el o p m en t a n d l ead e rs hip Hillary Scholars Welcome It gives me pleasure to welcome all of the University of Waikato Hillary Scholars into the programme for 2006. As the Programme enters its second year, I am greatly encouraged both by the achievements of scholars last year and the very high quality of those coming on to the Programme this year. Our country and indeed nations around the world need able young men and women, perhaps more than ever before, who have the ability to lead, to make the right decisions, and to make a difference. History shows that the people who go on to achieve and make that difference are so often, high performing all rounders cast in the mould of a Hillary Scholar. These are challenging times but in winning a place on this Programme you have all already demonstrated that you do not shy from challenge. The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme will reward you with a platform to hone your skills and build successful careers in the future. To the new scholars, my advice is to learn from those already on the Programme where you can. The path will not be an easy one but I am confident that in the future you will look back on your decision as one of the most important in your life. For those who are continuing, make this year even stronger than the last. If you are graduating this year, set your goal on becoming an inaugural Hillary Medallist. Gallagher Charitable Trust as a Corporate Partner I am pleased to welcome the Gallagher Charitable Trust as a Corporate Partner of the University of Waikato’s Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme. Gallaghers are the first to be confirmed of a small “family” of corporate partners who will work with the University to develop and support the Programme. Margaret Comer, Gallagher Group Corporate Services Manager, will represent the Gallagher Group involvement. In addition to Margaret’s support, the Gallagher Charitable Trust has agreed to provide an annual contribution of $40,000 to the Programme over a period of five years. Chairman of the Trust Board, John Gallagher, sees the Hillary Programme initiative as a strong statement by the University regarding its future direction and its contribution to the social and economic life of the community. Margaret is enthusiastic about the opportunities the Programme presents for highly talented young people and shares the University’s aspiration to position the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship as New Zealand’s equivalent of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Two years later, with the assistance of the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme, Waikato Badminton is playing at the highest level within New Zealand, The Wisden Cup. The last time Waikato won the Wisden Cup was in 1938, it is time to write history again. Despite NZ Badminton’s recent success at the World Championship where we won a bronze medal for the first time, the numbers playing our sport are small compared with sports like rugby and netball. It is difficult for us to find suitable candidates for the Hillary Programme. We support the focus on high academic achievement as well Hillary Scholarship Programme as sporting achievement but it can be difficult to find players who fit that profile. We try to attract players that may not be at the absolute top in NZ Badminton now but have the potential to go there and, have excellent academic backgrounds. Due to the high standard and strong competition for places, Badminton struggled to get some athletes into the Programme this year. This is a concern for the future, I hope that as the Hillary Programme develops it is sensitive to the issues facing smaller sports so that they continue to have a good chance of bringing athletes into the Programme. I wish all the scholars good luck for 2006. These opportunities only come along once and you have to grasp them with both hands. Work hard and I would like to refer to a saying by an old Chinese Ballet teacher, Mr. Xiao: “Physical limitations are easier to overcome than mental deficiencies” Tjitte Weistra Commonwealth Games Head Coach, Waikato Badminton Regional Coach Advancing the University Vision I am pleased to join with Sir Edmund in welcoming the 2006 intake of Hillary Scholars. One of my first formal roles as Vice Chancellor was to address the inaugural group of scholars and their families. It was very rewarding for me to observe the development of the scholars during the year and to note their outstanding achievements. I am confident that you too will go on to make your mark as Hillary Scholars and as important representatives of the University of Waikato during 2006. The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme will play a key role in the advancement of my vision for the University of Waikato. It is significant that the Programme was singled out for mention in a very positive report presented to the University of Waikato by the New Zealand Universities Academic Audit Unit after their audit visit during 2005. I look forward to meeting you all soon, and encourage you to capitalise fully on all the opportunities the Hillary Programme provides as you progress through the year. Professor Roy Crawford, Vice Chancellor Hillary Senior Scholar Award This year, the Hillary Medal will be awarded for the first time. The medal will be awarded to the graduating Hillary Senior Scholars who have achieved at the highest level academically, who have excelled in their specialist activity and who have demonstrated special leadership while on the Programme. It is intended that awards will be made each year to recognise all round excellence, and to acknowledge the special contribution the highest performers make to the Programme and to the University of Waikato.
