Leading Musicians
Hillary Scholar, Sarah Ho
Hillary Arts scholars who are studying music at the
University of Waikato are given a rare opportunity to
work with some of New Zealand’s leading musicians.
Sarah has come a long way since she
immigrated to New Zealand with her family
from Taiwan when she was ten, unable to
speak English and with no specific sporting
skills. She began playing table tennis at the
age of fourteen. Her rapid advancement in
just seven years in her chosen sport, despite
being a “late starter”, demonstrates
Sarah’s ability, determination, strong competitive streak, work
ethic and active pursuit of excellence.
James Tennant (cello) Katherine Austin (piano) David
Griffiths (voice) and newly arrived Lara Hall (violin) drive the
performance stream in the music department with passion,
enthusiasm and outstanding musicianship. Their performing
careers are simply outstanding with all achieving National and
International acclaim.
What is most unusual about this group of musicians is that they
not only have an intense passion for performing but also are
equally passionate about teaching. No less than seven of the last
ten National Chamber Music Competition winners were coached
by none other than James Tennant and Katherine Austin.
James Tennant has had a very interesting and rewarding career
from playing for Motown to the Detroit Symphony under
conductors such as Dorati, Bernstein and Mariner to name a few.
He has given many concerts as a soloist including performances
at St Martin in the Fields. Originally from the USA, James has lived
in New Zealand now for 25 years and divides his time between
performing, teaching and conducting. He is also a member of
the renowned ‘Ogen Trio’
[Katherine Austin] is mercurial, alert and a supreme colourist..
I’d put her among the top six pianists in the country and
almost unrivalled as a chamber ensemble pianist.” Ian Dando,
The Listener Dec 2005.
Katherine, is also a member of the ‘Ogen Trio’ and performs
regularly around New Zealand as a concerto soloist, chamber
soloist and chamber musician solo recitalist.
David Griffiths is one of this country’s finest baritones and
has had singing engagements with NBR New Zealand Opera,
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland
Philharmonia. His recital tours have taken him to America,
England and Taiwan.
Lara Hall has returned to New Zealand after a long stint
overseas where she gained her DMA and was a graduate student
instructor at the University of Michigan. She has performed
with the Swedish Chamber orchestra Camerata Nordica, and
has performed with American musicians from both the Detroit
and National Symphony orchestras. Lara has performed a great
deal of chamber music with some of America’s finest musicians
and approaches her performance and teaching with the same
passion as her colleagues at the University of Waikato.
Sarah first represented New Zealand as a junior in 2002. After a break in
2003, Sarah returned to active training in 2004, rapidly re-establishing herself
at the top. In 2005 Sarah won the Waikato women’s title for the fourth year,
won open women’s tournaments in Auckland and the lower North Island and
capped the year off by being selected for the test match against Australia and
duly winning her match.
2006 started in excellent fashion for Sarah, being chosen in the NZ women’s
team for the World Teams Championships recently held in Germany.
In her first opportunity to gain experience against the world’s best senior
representatives, Sarah showed her ability to step up to a higher level, winning
half of her matches. Sarah has also been selected in the NZ team for the
Oceania Championships to be held in late June, and has another busy year of
study pursuing a conjoint degree in Law and Social Science.
Our Sons
“We have two sons who have been members of the University
of Waikato Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme since its
introduction. Through their eyes and through participating in the
‘family’ events associated with the Programme we have come to
really appreciate what being a Hillary Scholar means. Dean and
Craig were already accomplished and motivated young men, but we
have watched them lifting their horizons, expanding their thinking
through the support and the extra challenges and development
the Programme provides. In a sense the Programme has offered the
range of opportunities we, as parents, would wish for our children,
but which few of us would have the contacts to be able to provide
at this level; opportunities not only to advance themselves but also
to give something back to the wider community. In our view the
concept is an admirable one; it is going to produce some very able
and successful young people. Two of them will be our sons.”

Netball a source of pride
for the Region
Sir Edmund Hillary
Scholarship Programme
The success and achievement of Netball Waikato
teams and individuals during the 2005 season was
a great source of pride for the Region. Such success
continues to demonstrate the strength of high
performance and development programmes for
players and umpires, some of whom have also been
supported by their involvement with the Sir Edmund
Hillary Scholarship Programme.

consolidated their positions in representative teams.
•
and more...
Looking further forward we see the programme playing a strategic role to ensure Netball Waikato
maintains its place as a leading Netball Region within New Zealand. Being able to offer a base for
life planning as well as sporting development will become increasingly important. This is one of the
strengths of the Region and we see this programme as an investment in keeping it that way.

Every year we see our elite young athletes struggle to balance the demands of study and maintain
their development in netball. Through the Hillary Programme, the opportunity was created to work
more closely with our elite players, (currently attending the University), to support their overall
development and ease some of the pressure that is placed upon them.
Hillary Scholar, Courtney Mason
Courtney is currently in her second year of studying towards a Bachelor
of Arts, majoring in Theatre Studies. Courtney who attended Hamilton’s
Fraser High School, is passionate about musical theatre and has
performed in several Hamilton productions. She is currently involved in
Musikmakers production of The Mikado and will also be involved in the
upcoming Swamp Treasures featuring in the Fuel Festival. Courtney’s
goal is to one day open her own theatre company.
World of Alchemy
There is much talk about the importance of “Leadership” in today’s new world of
technology, globalization and free markets. But leadership alone is not enough
in today’s rapidly changing, challenging and ambiguous new world. We are now
identifying a state beyond Leadership. The world of “Alchemy”. In yesterday’s world,
Alchemists were feared and controlled by the established powers because of their
ability to create gold out of base metals. In today’s world, Alchemists are admired
(and feared) because of their ability to create something out of little more than their
imagination and ideas.
The art of Alchemy can be learned. It involves personal perspectives and processes that are
available to us all. But they will be effectively used only by those who have a unique combination
of intelligence, determination, skill and personal leadership.
Neil Richardson’s presentation as part of the Personal Development and Leadership Programme will
be inspirational and very practical. It is based on his personal journey over 35 years of academic,
business and sporting life. Neil who has three degrees (BC, MC, JD) has worked with multinational
companies around the world, taught at four universities, been an international management
consultant, been chairman of NZ Government enterprises (AgResearch, Foundation for Research,
Science and Technology), been involved as chairman/co-founder of five successful start-up
businesses over the past ten years (including the only New Zealand company to float on the
London Stock Exchange, the dominant optical company in NZ and a company amongst the world
leaders in telematics). Neil is also an Adjunct Professor in Management at Waikato University.
