From Strength to Strength
I want to open my end of year remarks by congratulating
the Hillary Scholars on their achievements. I also want to
acknowledge the University of Waikato and its many partners,
on behalf of the scholars, for their ongoing support for the Hillary
Scholarship Programme as it goes from strength to strength.
I was very impressed with the list of continuing achievements
by Hillary Scholars that was reported to me for the first half of
this year. As the Programme gains maturity and more Hillary
Scholars graduate I will be equally interested to hear about their
achievements as they succeed in their next set of challenges.
The Hillary Scholarship Programme provides a unique platform
for career development. The philosophy of supporting all round
excellence and balanced personal growth and development,
is one that I applaud. As I move around the country I see more
and more enthusiastic multi-talented young people who would
respond so well to the opportunities that the Hillary Scholarship
Programme provides. I hope that recent Hillary Scholars will
seek out opportunities to provide advice for such young people.
I hope too that they will retain strong links to the Programme
and continue to provide encouragement and direction for those
coming through.
I also want to say that I was impressed with the feedback in the
May Hillary Newsletter from parents of our scholars and partners
of the Programme. While it is very gratifying to see scholars
achieving, it is equally gratifying to see the value it provides being
so enthusiastically acknowledged by parents and partners.
Finally with the end of the year in sight, it is the time when we
reflect on what has been achieved, and what might have been.
It is the time to think about goals and targets for next year and
what can be done better. My advice is to set those targets high.
Later on in life you will realise more and more the value of the
support that this Programme has provided.
Sir Edmund Hillary
Arts Excel
This year they have made a particularly significant contribution to raising
the profile of the Hillary Scholarship Programme in the community.
Hillary Scholars in the
creative and performing arts
have excelled during 2006.
Their special performances
and contributions are being
increasingly recognized by
the arts community at both
regional and national levels.
Jisun Kim and Callum Hall have been selected for the National Youth
Orchestra with Callum being singled out to lead the cellists. Lucas de
Jong won the Lions National Young Speaker Competition. Tamati Te
Nohutu has been performing as Maui in Maui – One Man Against the
Gods. A number of the theatre students performed in Swamp Treasures,
a production that recently featured in the Fuel Festival. They will be
joined by a number of the music students in the upcoming White Lady
Opera, being performed at the WEL Energy Trust of Performing Arts
from 7 to 10 September. Jeremy Mayall had his music video debut on
Homegrown, and has composed an orchestral piece to be played by the
Waikato Youth Orchestra. Graphic Design student, Christopher Dunn,
was responsible for the new design cover for the Hillary Scholarship
Programme brochure, as illustrated.
There are 18 Hillary Scholars
specialising in the arts
disciplines at the University
of Waikato, spanning music,
theatre, dance, graphic design,
screen and media, māori
performance and creative arts. Each student works with their supervisor
to complete an annual plan that includes special challenges to extend
the scholar and foster excellence and promote personal development.
In addition the Hillary Scholars have been provided with opportunities
to learn from each other and to develop an understanding of other
arts disciplines by participating in special team building sessions
and workshops.

A culture of support and success
As we approach the end of another academic year, I welcome the
opportunity to congratulate Hillary Scholars on an impressive
performance during 2006.
Your high standard of achievement on so many fronts reinforces my goals
and aspirations for the University as a whole. Building upon a culture of
support and success is very important as I focus on bedding down the new
strategic plan during the remainder of the year and into 2007.
I want to draw special attention to the contribution made by the Hillary Scholars in the creative and
performing arts reported elsewhere in this newsletter. Our sports scholars too have continued to
make their mark in 2006. 9 scholars represented New Zealand at senior level, and 12 at age group
level. 14 scholars participated at world events in special activity areas, including 5 who participated
in Commonwealth, Oceania events to acknowledge just a few of their many achievements.
The contribution that you have been making to the University’s partnerships and profile in the
community is acknowledged and appreciated.
Finally I extend my best wishes to those Hillary Scholars who will be graduating this year. We all
look forward to following your continuing success as your build upon the platform that this special
University of Waikato Programme has provided for you.
Professor Roy Crawford – Vice Chancellor
Hillary Scholars
June Dams
June, who is an ex pupil of
Tauranga Girls’ College, wants
to become an opera singer
and is currently studying
towards a Bachelor of Music
in Performance (voice) and
a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies with a second
major in Composition. In 2005 she won first prize
in the acoustic section and the performance
prize in the Lilburn Trust Student Competition
Awards. This year June’s orchestral composition
“Kaleidoscope of Truth” was selected to be part
of the NZSO/Todd Corporation Young Composer
Awards. She won the Hamilton Civic Choir
Associate Artist Award and has won an automatic
nomination to the PACANZ Young Performer of
the Year Awards due to excellent performances at
Tauranga competitions.
Mark Burman
Mark is a rugby player
and if he has any spare
time, a volunteer
lifeguard. Mark is in
his second season
with the Waikato
NPC team as a Lock/Blindside Flanker.
He is also a member of the Te Rapa Senior
A Squad for club rugby and a member of the
Chiefs Development team. He is a fourth
year Management student currently doing
Honours and is a member of the Golden
Key International Honours Society. Mark is a
leader within the community and a name to
watch out for in the future. Born and bred
in Hamilton, Mark attended Hamilton Boys’
High School and was a Waikato Under 14,
Under 15, Under 16 and Secondary School
rugby representative.
Soccer participation grows
Soccer is reaching an interesting stage in New Zealand. Participation
at junior level is high and growing. Increasing numbers of young
New Zealanders are beginning to make their mark in overseas
football teams. We are seeing the benefits starting to flow back
to New Zealand with the recent encouraging performances by the
New Zealand national team, the All Whites.
The real challenge is to provide the pathways that enable talented youngsters to continue developing
their sport and their skill levels as they advance beyond high school. In Waikato we have some of the
most highly ranked schools in New Zealand in the sport. Enabling these players to stay in the game
while they address their many other responsibilities will have a significant bearing on the continuing
development of the code at a regional level and nationally.
I have been pleased to have had the opportunity to work with the University of Waikato in getting
the Hillary Scholarship Programme up and running. Soccer has become one of the major partners in
the Programme, and we have already seen benefits for the soccer scholars and for the region.
As I move on I wish the Programme every success and will continue to ‘spread the word’ whenever
the chance arises.
