SIR EDMUND HILLARY
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME 2008
Like the rest of New Zealand, the University of Waikato
mourned the passing of Sir Edmund Hillary earlier this year.
He was an inspiration to all New Zealanders, but particularly young
people, and he was keen to encourage them to challenge themselves.
As patron of the University of Waikato Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship
Programme he espoused its philosophy of excellence, all round
development – both academic and sporting or creative – and leadership.
The programme, which provides a full scholarship and support for some
of this country’s highest achieving students, is designed to challenge
and stretch capability; it is about innovation, and strong networks and
relationships – attributes its patron had in plenty.
The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme will certainly continue, in
honour of its founding patron with our students taking their inspiration
from his many achievements, as well as his personal qualities. As always,
we are grateful for the support provided to the programme by local
organisations and people who are, like Sir Ed, committed to fostering all
round excellence in our young people. I would to particularly note the
contributions of the Gallagher Group, and Calder and Lawson’s Orbit
Corporate Travel.
My congratulations and welcome to our 47 new 2008 Hillary Scholars.
We know that they are among the most talented and hardworking
of their generation – certainly their academic and either sporting or
performance achievements do not come without many solid hours of
preparation and perspiration.
The 2008 Hillary Scholars represent music, screen and media, theatre,
dance, graphic design, Māori performance and creative art and a
wide range of sporting codes. Scholarships were awarded in four new
categories this year; Waka Ama, snowboarding, judo and hockey
umpiring. Many of the recipients are from the Waikato region, with
others from as far afield as Ohakune, Taranaki and Northland.
Sir Edmund received an Honorary Doctorate from the University in
2006. This recognised his achievements in exploration, philanthropy, and
environmental conservation and also for his representation of the values
of excellence of the University. We particularly acknowledge his personal
strengths – of leadership, fearlessness
and commitment, all of which he so
enthusiastically fostered in others.
We look forward to seeing our new Hillary
Scholars, plus the other 65 currently on
the programme, taking up Sir Edmund’s
challenge to be the best they can in their
studies at the University of Waikato and
in all other aspects of their lives
With my very best wishes
Roy Crawford, Vice-Chancellor
Sir Edmund Hillary 1919-2008
SIR EDMUND SETS A CHALLENGE
FOR HILLARY SCHOLARS
By being awarded a Hillary Scholarship students are accepting the
challenge of achieving on three fronts – to achieve at least a B
grade average in their academic study at the University of Waikato,
to perform in their chosen sport or creative and performing art,
and to fulfil the requirements of the Leadership and Personal
Development Programme.
As part of the Leadership and Personal Development Programme,
Sir Edmund Hillary has given the Hillary Scholars his own challenge.
His challenge to Hillary Scholars is to complete their Personal Purpose
over their period of study.
“A Personal Purpose assists you in developing an inspirational future. It
gives an understanding of what is important to you, that leads to better
clarity and confidence when making decisions. The Personal Purpose will
give you a real head start when seeking employment in future years.”
The Hillary Challenge – Personal Purpose Workshop will be delivered
to Hillary Scholars by Professor Clive Gilson from the Waikato
Management School. Clive is a close friend of Sir Edmund. “After
writing the foreword for the book Peak Performance, Sir Edmund
encouraged us to develop the peak performance for organisations
into a similar concept for individuals, this became Personal Purpose.
Sir Ed loved challenges and always encouraged me and others to seek
challenges, to have an eye for something big, something that would
stretch our ability to the utmost. It will be a pleasure working with the
Hillary Scholars, to encourage them to seek guidance from friends and
fellow Hillary Scholars as they discover their Personal Purpose”

SQUASH CHAMPIONS
The first man to set foot on the summit of
Everest, the man who led a team of tractors
to the South Pole, the man who jetboated up
the Ganges from the ocean to the sky has,
for the first time, gathered all the remarkable
adventures of a long life into one volume. But
there is more to Ed Hillary than this. He is also
the man who repaid his debt of fame to the
Himalayas by inaugurating a programme of
building schools, clinics, airstrips and bridges in
Nepal. With his still active support, these have
gone from strength to strength in the 50 years
since he himself mastered the Hillary Step and
led his companion Tenzing Norgay up Everest’s
final summit ridge.
View from the Summit is a thoughtful and honest
reappraisal of a life spent pushing human ability
to its limits and relishing the challenges thrown
down by the elements. It is also the story of a man
whom the world has taken to its heart
Waikato has a proud tradition of producing national and international
squash champions, and our partnership with the Hillary Scholarship
Programme aims to continue and build on that tradition. Squash Waikato is
delighted to welcome Amanda Cranston, one of the top five junior women in
New Zealand, and Steven Martin, the top junior male in the Waikato. These
new Scholars join Scott Calder and Chloe Hoolihan who are into their third
year of University and aiming to achieve A grade (in squash) this year.
Squash Waikato represents 26 member clubs from Huntly in the north, east to Mercury
Bay and south as far as Taumarunui. Over 1000 players compete in weekly interclub
competition through winter and every weekend there are numerous tournaments to
challenge the competitive player. Our squash clubs also include many more ‘social’
players who play with family and friends
as a quick and enjoyable workout.
Voted by Forbes 500 as “the world’s
healthiest sport”, squash provides an
awesome cardio and muscular workout
in 30-40 minutes. Club membership is
affordable, and you’re never rained off or
inhibited by the weather. Athletes from a
range of sports use squash as a fun and
effective cross-training session. The Rec
Centre on the University campus has
squash courts for you to see for yourself

Gabrielle who as an inaugural Hillary Scholar has just completed
a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies with Honours, is the
2007 recipient of the Hillary Medal for sport. She has been
rowing competitively for New Zealand over the last few years
while juggling full-time study along with a part time job. She was
awarded Waikato University Blues Awards in 2004, 2006, and
2007, and was the recipient of the Fair Play award in 2007. Her
future aspirations are to represent New Zealand in rowing at the
2012 Olympic Games, and to make a significant contribution in
the field of health promotion. At present she has just been given
the chance to become a trainee paramedic in Sydney. Gabrielle
states that the role of a paramedic strongly appeals to her as she
comes from a sport and medical background. “The opportunity to
deliver vital pre-hospital care in a challenging and highly skilled
situation is an exciting and rewarding prospect”. We wish Gabby
all the very best with her future endeavours.
Along with the excellent support provided through the Hillary Programme, our scholars’
progress is overseen by Lindsey Walters, the District Coaching Coordinator for Squash
Waikato. New to the Waikato having moved here from the deep South, Lindsey also
contributes to the National Coaching programme based at Unitec’s National Squash
Centre in Henderson.

Congratulations to this year’s winners!. We at Bennetts Bookshop look forward to helping you
achieve your goals and wish you all the best for your future studies at Waikato University
Gabrielle Rogers
“My achievements have resulted from
a goodly share of imagination and
plenty of energy. As a Hillary Scholar
you are given every opportunity to
challenge yourself. Seize this chance.”
As most New Zealanders and many, many others around the world will agree, Sir Edmund’s
legacy should and will be the continuation of his longstanding philanthropic endeavours. It is
our firm belief that the future potential of this year’s recipients will help provide the impetus
to carry his success to even greater heights both within New Zealand and Internationally.
