September 2008 Hillary Scholarship Programme inspiring excellence, all round development and leadership CAPTURING THE SPIRIT JOURNEY TO THE SUMMIT Sir Edmund Hillary is the patron of the University of Waikato’s Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme. His sad passing this year creates a challenge for the University to ensure that the future meaning and success of the Programme continues to reflect the spirit of Sir Ed together with what he considered to be important. Inspired by Sir Edmund Hillary’s book View from the Summit, which was given to Hillary Scholars at the beginning of the year, the CD project Journey to the Summit is forging ahead. So a full-day meeting, chaired by Professor Doug Sutton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, is being held which will draw on the knowledge of the Programme from current and past Hillary scholars, arts and sports partners and the Hillary Executive Committee. Professor Clive Gilson of the Waikato Management School will facilitate the workshop session that will aim to capture the spirit and core beliefs that underpin the Programme and to define where it is going. Professor Gilson has conducted similar workshops with iconic sport and business organisations around the world including Inter-Milan, Procter & Gamble and the New Zealand Olympic Committee. Professor Sutton comments that “the Hillary Scholarship Programme is a unique package combining full fees scholarships for study, a high level of support for scholars provided by the University and its partners, and leadership development opportunities. Its connection to Sir Edmund Hillary is very important and through this planning day we hope to strongly connect the values of Sir Ed to those of the Programme. I am delighted that Lady Hillary has agreed to assist in this process by commenting on the work when completed.” The University of Waikato creative arts scholars took their inspiration from the book that they are embarking on a life journey to success. The recording for the CD, Journey to the Summit, has been completed at the WEL Energy Academy of Performing Arts, and is now being mastered by Wayne Laird from Atoll Records. This CD showcases the talents of the 2008 music Hillary Scholars through a collection of classical pieces. Performers are; cellists’ Callum Hall, Jisun Kim, Sarah Lee and Edward King; opera singers June Dams, Julia Booth, Angela Rümping and Evelyne Waters; pianists Maria Mo and Tim Li and oboist Jenny Johnson. Several pieces have been recorded including pieces by Bach, Debussy and Gershwin, plus pieces composed and performed by mezzo soprano, June Dams. Journey to the Summit CD booklet design. LEADING THE WAY TO APEC Hillary Scholar Jordan Taylor is going to the APEC leaders’ summit in Peru in November. He was one of four New Zealand students selected to go to the summit after attending the Voices of APEC national youth event in Christchurch during the semester break. “In Christchurch we met business and political leaders and got an insight into the workings of APEC. I think going to Peru will build on that,” Jordan says. “We get to interview world leaders from some of the 21 APEC economies and I’m sure I’ll come back with a much bigger and better understanding of how business and politics work and the major issues facing APEC.” Hillary Scholar and athlete, Jordan Taylor. Jordan is a first year student studying for a Bachelor of Management Studies degree and is a sport scholar in athletics. The CD will be launched later this year, along with a mini documentary of the making of the CD. For the mini documentary, screen and media Hillary scholars shot digital footage at the last recording session at the Academy and then spent some time with music students filming them at a variety of venues. Hillary Programme graphics students have developed the design for the CD booklet and a poster. Meanwhile, theatre and dance students are researching and developing their devised piece for the late November launch. The performance piece is based upon the title ‘Journey to the Summit’ and as with all elements of the CD project is a tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary. JOURNEY TO THE SUMMIT CD Will be available to purchase from 1 November at www.waikato.ac.nz/go/journey Hillary Scholarship Programme September 2008 CLAIRE GRAY A NEW WORLD CHAMPION Being singled out as someone who has potential is somewhat daunting while being completely inspiring. For me this is what it is like being a Hillary Scholar! When I was awarded the Hillary Scholarship in 2006 I saw it as people placing faith in me. This gave me confidence to believe in myself. In this way the Hillary Scholarship has provided a platform from which to grow and develop myself in many areas. One area in particular that has grabbed my heart is work in the community. I am currently involved in a number of different aspects of community work. I volunteer weekly at a soup kitchen run by my local church targeted at lower socio-economic families and homeless people. This has been the most amazing experience and has exposed me to situations and people which have revolutionised my worldview. I have also been part of a group which has initiated grassroots community action including anonymous food parcel delivery and linen parcels. These activities stirred within me a passion for serving those marginalised and forgotten by our society. I was convinced that the work I was currently involved in was only scratching the surface of a deeper need. This feeling was shared by two of my friends and was the seed for an event we now run known as Streetworks. Streetworks is a weekend community event which runs twice a year and is aimed at seeing people of all generations, denominations and backgrounds engaging with one another and serving needs within the community. Streetworks’ aim is to be a platform upon which all people will realize their capacity and take initiative in their own communities. The goal is not to run an event, but to inspire a change in lifestyle; that our daily lives would Hillary Scholar and dancer, Claire Gray. be an example of justice and compassion. I have been so changed by the leadership roles I’ve been blessed with in the community, and I want to expose others to similar experiences. Sir Edmund Hillary once said that a challenge should be like “…the roar of a thousand tigers.” I believe that responding to our personal roar of a thousand tigers is truly what it means to be a Hillary Scholar. For me, my “roar of a thousand tigers” lies in the huge challenges of community work and service. I look to Sir Ed and the humanitarian work he conducted in Nepal as my daily inspiration. It is an honour for me to have my name associated with his. Hillary Scholarship Programme September 2008 World Champion rower and Hillary Scholar Graham Oberlin-Brown. Congratulations to Hillary Scholar Graham Oberlin-Brown who won the world title in the lightweight single scull event at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Brandenburg, Germany. HOCKEY HITS HIGH PERFORMANCE NOTES Attracting and retaining senior players is not always easy for Waikato Hockey, so the partnership with the University of Waikato is a vital one. This year has seen Waikato Hockey implement a dedicated high performance programme for the first time. Hillary Scholarships have attracted talented hockey players to the region and this has provided Waikato Hockey with the boost it needed to justify the high performance programme. With sponsorship from ABN AMRO Craigs this high performance programme is set to attract more talent to the region. The programme is facilitated by a team of high performance coaches led by Darren Smith, High-Performance Director of Midlands Hockey who played 212 tests for the Blacksticks and is currently the assistant coach and videographer for the Blacksticks Men’s team who went Hillary Scholar, hockey player, Tom Lysaght. to the Beijing Olympics. Of the 10 Hillary Scholars who are hockey players, Tom Lysaght (pictured) and Cathryn Finlayson are both Junior Blacksticks. Tom also captained the Waikato U18 team and played in the Midlands U21 team. Cathryn was selected to coach at the Regional Coaching Clinic and played for the Midlands U21 team. The key to the growth of hockey in the Waikato region is to retain talented players by providing an environment where their hockey will prosper without the need to make the big move over the hill to Auckland. Jack Clayton, Waikato Hockey’s Regional Development Manager and Sport Manager to the Hillary Scholarship Programme, says, “The partnership with the University of Waikato gives Waikato Hockey a means of attracting quality players to the region and this will lead to better results in the National Hockey League (NHL). The spin-off from this should be a stronger local competition which will encourage talented players to remain in the region.” GROUP TRAVEL EXPERTS If you have a minimum of ten people travelling together, we invite you to take advantage of our experience, global contacts and buying power. SIR EDMUND HILLARY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME www.waikato.ac.nz/hillary BE YOURSELF Be yourself was the key advice given to Hillary Scholars at their recent public speaking workshop. Public speaking is said to be the number one greatest fear. So the Hillary Programme recruited the services of 2B to eliminate some of these fears. Chris Williams, graphic design student, said “The Public Speaking session was great fun and an awesome way to meet some of the other scholars. I haven’t played musical chairs in about 13 years so to have it combined in the impromptu speech exercise was a blast!” In this highly interactive session scholars were asked to use their expressive voice, have a physical presence and utilise storytelling. Through these means the secrets of being yourself when public speaking were explained. Maia Gibbs and Rebecca Wright at the public speaking workshop. The key facilitator, Lisa Brickell, is a professional comedian and comedy coach. “It was very rewarding to work with the Hillary Scholars. They are inspiring, dynamic young leaders of the future who all fully participated in the workshop, learning from each other’s diverse experience and making tremendous progress with their public speaking in a short space of time.” 2B are a group of professional actors and vocal consultants who specialise in developing performance techniques to enhance public speaking skills. Their clients include Prime Minister Helen Clark and Satchi & Satchi, and now the Hillary Scholars. JUSTIN STEWART, REC CENTRE PHYSICAL CONDITIONER Justin Stewart has always been passionate about sport, participating in almost all sports from an early age in South Africa. He first dreamed of being the next Clive Rice (South African Cricketer) or Bruce Grobbelaar (Liverpool’s Goalie). A severe groin injury in 1993 hampered Justin’s transition from a good junior athlete into a good senior athlete. Not wanting others to go through the same agony and mismanagement as he went through, he completed a Sports Science degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal graduating at the top of the class and was accepted into Honours to study Bio kinetics (an exercise specialist). Following this he undertook a six month internship at the Kings Park Sports Medicine Clinic, which incorporated work for the Sharks Rugby Team. Justin enjoys spending time with his wife Hayley and his one year daughter Kimberly. Of course he has been analysing Kimberly’s movements with the hope of creating the perfect athlete. Justin just can’t stop thinking about how movement affects performance. Hillary Scholars beware – Justin analyses all your physical conditioning done at the Rec Centre. Free physical conditioning available to Hillary Scholars includes individual fitness tests and strength training programmes, plus group training sessions for core flexibility, rehabilitation, endurance and speed.
