SIR EDMUND HILLARY
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
inspiring excellence, all-round development and leadership
FROM THE
VICE-CHANCELLOR
The establishment of the Sir Edmund
Hilary Scholarship Programme in
2005 was a significant step for the
University of Waikato.
These Scholarships are awarded to very
special and talented young people, to
help them gain formal qualifications while
continuing to develop their sporting or
artistic skills. Over the past four years we
have seen Hillary Scholars complete their
academic studies and perform or compete
against the best in the world in a wide
range of activities.
We are very grateful to our sponsors who
help the University of Waikato provide the
required level of support – which includes
full fee payment through to additional
mentoring and leadership training.
Last year Hamilton travel firm Orbit
Corporate Travel (part of the Calder and
Lawson House of Travel organisation)
enhanced its five-year commitment
to the programme and the Gallagher
Group also contributes as one of its
community initiatives.
Recently the University entered into a
partnership with the Waikato Times to
provide free newspapers to students on
campus. As part of this relationship, the
newspaper is donating $40,000 to the
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme.
I welcome the Waikato Times to the team
of sponsors for the Hillary Scholarship
Programme. We are delighted that they
are now playing an important part in the
development of our Hillary students.
It is with the generous support of
our sponsors that we are able to provide
this unique Scholarship programme
to challenge and inspire, and assist in
the development of New Zealand’s
future leaders.
Roy Crawford
Vice-Chancellor
2008 HILLARY MEDALLISTS
The 2008 Hillary medallists are pianist Mario Mo and eventer Tom Lane.
Sir Edmund Hillary medals are given to “the best” graduating Waikato University
Hillary scholars who have achieved at the highest level academically and in their
chosen performing art or sport and who have also shown leadership potential.
Pianist Maria Mo.
Eventer Tom Lane.
Maria Mo came to New Zealand from South Korea when she was eight, completed her secondary
schooling at Hamilton Girls’ High School and enrolled at university unsure what direction her
musical career would take.
She says meeting her piano teacher Katherine Austin opened her ears to what classical music
was all about. “It isn’t just black notes printed on a page, but emotion, inspiration, what fuels
the soul and frees the spirit. Classical music went from something I had just always ‘done’ and
not quite understood, to something that encompassed the biggest range of musical fulfilment
for me. It became something larger than life.”
Last year, Maria graduated with a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours and she is now
studying for a Masters of Music in piano performance. Once Maria’s completed her Masters she
plans to travel overseas to do further study in Germany or Austria, and become a concert pianist,
soloist, chamber musician and teacher. She says she’s honoured to receive the Hillary medal.
“We all know what a great man Sir Ed was and I applied for the award not as a career move, but
because I saw it as an honour to have my name associated with his. I also saw it as a challenge to
meet the high standards needed to be eligible.”
Equestrian eventer Tom Lane echoes Maria’s sentiments. He’s just graduated with a double law and
arts degree and recently submitted his Masters thesis. He’s currently training two young horses for
upper level competition, is chairman of Eventing Waikato and vice-chair of Eventing Kihikihi and
working full-time for Chapman Tripp in Auckland in their resource management team.
“You could say life’s pretty busy, but I got used to that at university. I was working a team of
horses and competing at various equestrian events during my study.” Tom’s special interest is in
resources and environmental law. “Waikato’s got two of the best professors in the country in
Barry Barton and Al Gillespie; they were great and so was Deputy Vice-Chancellor Doug Sutton
who has been a great mentor.”
For his Masters, Tom studied the legal aspects
of the Emissions Trading Scheme and its
application in New Zealand. He sees his longterm legal future focussing on this area, helping
New Zealand to compete internationally while
also promoting environmental protection.
And on the equestrian front he’s planning to
campaign his team in England with a view to
making the New Zealand eventing team at the
Olympic Games in 2016.

SLICK ON THE WATER
Waikato University student Renee Hannah goes water skiing almost every day.
She has to, because later in the year she joins
three other New Zealanders going to Mexico
to compete at the Under 21 world water ski
championships. She’s also a reserve for the
senior world championships being held in
Canada in December.
During the summer Hannah was training with
professional coaches Aaron Larkin and Duncan
Hancock, both from Hamilton. They’ve now
gone to America to work and she hopes she’ll
be able to join at least one of them in Florida
before heading down to Mexico.
Eighteen-year-old Hannah is studying Sport
and Leisure in her first year at Waikato, but
every day she teams up with other skiers, drives
to Karapiro (her favourite skiing location) and
does three 20 minute sessions behind the boat.
She qualified for Mexico after winning the
women’s open tricks title at nationals in
Auckland last month. She comes from Ngakuru
near Rotorua and all her family including Mum
and Dad ski competitively. Renee and her sister
have represented New Zealand in age-group
teams and that’s seen them travel all over the
world. As an event skier, Hannah competes in
three disciplines – the slalom, trick and jump
and each requires different skis. She also
always has to have a boat and a driver on hand
whenever she wants to go out on the water.
“Now it’s getting colder it’s a bit harder to
stay motivated and I’ll probably spend more
time in the gym as winter sets in. But I can’t
slacken off. There are no more competitions
between now and when we go to Mexico in
October, so I’ve got to keep on training and
make sure I don’t get injured.”
Hillary Scholar Renee Hannah.
“It’s an expensive sport and I’m currently
looking for sponsorship to Mexico,” says
Hannah. “Competition sometimes means
I have to miss classes but everyone’s been
so supportive helping me to stay on top of
my uni work.”
YOUNG BLADES SEE THE BENEFIT OF THE
SIR EDMUND HILLARY SCHOLARSHIP
Some of the brightest stars in the future of rowing at Waikato University are
benefitting from the partnership between NZ Rowing and the Sir Edmund Hillary
Scholarship Programme.
Te Awamutu’s Under-23 lightweight single
sculling world champion Graham OberlinBrown, current Under 23 New Zealand team
quadruple scull crew member Alyce Pulford,
straight four member Regan Barkla a world
medalist in 2008, lightweight double sculler
and fellow 2008 medalist Julia Trautvetter,
2008 world medalist Sarah Gray, and up and
coming athlete Matthew Lobb are all part of
the programme. Oberlin-Brown and Pulford
are in their second year of the programme,
with the other students in their first year.
International Tourism student Oberlin-Brown,
who was also a finalist in the Emerging
Talent category of the 2009 Halberg Awards,
has now made the transition from successful
up and coming athlete (he has two world
titles at Under 23 level to his credit) to full
time member of the country’s outstanding
elite squad, securing his place in the New
Zealand lightweight four at the selection
trials in March.
He will race at the Munich and Lucerne
international World Cup regattas, at the
world famous Henley Royal Regatta and at
the senior World Championships scheduled
for Poznan in August.
Chris Williams in Vietnam.
STUDY IN SINGAPORE
I have taken the opportunity to study abroad
on exchange. I chose Singapore as it is
completely different from New Zealand but
still English speaking. Describing Singapore is
a tough challenge. Take Lake Taupo for a rough
size comparison add amazing advanced
architecture and facilities and then squeeze in
4.5 million people of varied culture and race.
Graham Oberlin Brown winning his Under 23
lightweight single sculling world title in 2008.
He is in no doubt of the value of the support
the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme
has given him, commenting:
“Being an aspiring senior international athlete
places many demands on a young person and
having the support of a programme like the
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship goes a long way
to allowing you to focus on the immediate,
medium and long term goals that you have in
both academic study and international sport.”
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme June 2009
I am studying at Nanyang Technological
University and as a Hillary Scholar I have
challenged myself to strive for excellence in
my chosen field of Computer Graphic Design.
So on top of the regular courses I am taking
three Singapore papers. These papers, including
2D animation and advanced audio engineering,
make the most of the different facilities offered.
With effective time management I have
managed to slip in a bit of travel to Vietnam,
Malaysia, Bali and Bintan Indonesia. This
exchange has been a life changing experience
for me and I am having a fantastic time
representing Waikato University, the Hillary
Scholars and New Zealand for that matter
I am the only one from New Zealand at
this University!

STEP HIGHER PIKI AKE
Step higher towards the summit
by achieving your goals was a key
message shared at the Sir Edmund
Hillary Scholarship Programme
Purpose Day.
Annette Ryan, the director from the Effect,
presented the team building workshop.
“To assist in creating tomorrow’s leaders is
important to New Zealand. It is a pleasure
to work with these talented students.”
Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar, Chase Douglas,
was brave enough to share his goals.
“I thought that I should take a stand
and represent the first year students. It
was an inspirational moment, with
students sharing similar passions.” Chase
is studying a Bachelor of Music and is
one of the 133 Hillary Scholars at the
University of Waikato.
The Purpose Day, at the start of the
academic year, is an opportunity
for the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholars
and their parents to mingle with
the partners and sponsors of the
Programme. All learn about the values
of the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship
Programme and all the scholars
receive a copy of Sir Edmund Hillary’s
book “A view to the Summit”.

IN THE BAY FOR THE BAY
The University is developing its presence in the Bay of Plenty, working in
partnership with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic to meet the needs of this
fast-growing region.
University students and staff are moving to share the polytechnic’s two sites – Windermere Campus
and the Bongard Centre. Plans for a new building at Windermere are also underway to accommodate
extra staff and students and shared campus facilities.
Based in Hamilton, the Effect is an
organisational development company
focused on motivating, driving and
inspiring people to greater performance.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford said University student numbers in Tauranga increased by
more than 40% this year, as increasing number of students were choosing to stay in the Bay for
study and research opportunities.
The programmes offered through the partnership with the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic enable
students to staircase seamlessly between the two institutions from entry level qualifications
to degrees. University qualifications complement and build on the Polytechnic’s certificate and
diploma programmes and are tailored to the distinctive needs of the region.
Ongoing discussions with iwi, businesses and community leaders helped define priorities and
courses in areas such as health management, computer science, marine studies, agri-business and
graphic design, are being developed, alongside the accounting, marketing, tourism, management,
law, and early childhood, primary and secondary teacher training and social work currently offered.
