(ELL ) Goals of Grant 1. Increase the number of in-service teachers who complete the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Endorsement 2. Increase the effectiveness of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics ((STEM), ), special p education,, and g general education teachers who work with ELLs 3. Increase the academic performance of ELLs in participating districts 4. Improve system support for the professional p of teachers who serve ELLs development Five Year Plan 1. Align UA’s TESOL courses with the National TESOL Standards 2. Provide approximately pp y 56 teachers across the region with convenient, costeffective options for completing the 22 credit dit hours h off coursework k required i d by b our TESOL program 3. Develop new courses that incorporate the SIOP Model Five Year Plan (cont.) 4. Provide a flexible, streamlined series of three (3) TESOL courses to 40 teachers (not seeking full TESOL Endorsement) 5. Provide high-quality online modules as part of the TESOL p p program g 6. Provide professional development to school districts as well as Education faculty at UA and Malone Expected Outcomes for Project ACHIEVE • Outcomes include improved English language acquisition, English literacy, and performance in academic content subjects by Northeast Ohio ELLs due to the increased expertise and improved practice of their teachers teachers. The five participating urban districts and rural districts in Stark County y collectively y serve approximately 5,000 ELLs. Streamlined Program • Linguistics and Language Arts (3 cr.) • Theoretical Foundations and Principles of ESL (3 cr.) • Scaffolding Language and Content Learning for English Learners (3 cr.) SIOP® National Conference Overview of SIOP® • The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model M d l is i a research-based h b d and d validated instructional model that has proven to be effective in addressing g the academic needs of English learners (ELLs) throughout the United States. • The SIOP® Model consists of eight interrelated p that shelter instruction for ELLs: components The Eight Components of SIOP® 1. Review/Assessment Using instructional strategies connected to each of these components, teachers are able to design and deliver lessons that address the academic and linguistic needs of ELLs and help them become successful in school.
