Research Excellence Awards Purposes, Procedures and Criteria Maintained by: Mike Bell, Secretary to Staff Awards Committee Created: July 2014 Last Updated: July 2014 P U RP O SES The purposes of Research Excellence Awards are to recognise and celebrate the contributions of staff to research excellence and assist the University to create a strong research culture. N AT U R E O F AWAR D S Research Excellence Awards complement other staff excellence awards overseen by the Staff Awards Committee. They comprise a trophy. There is no monetary component associated with these awards. Research Excellence Awards will be awarded every two years in the categories of: Commercial Research Community Impact Early Career Lifetime Achievement Māori/Indigenous Scholar Research Team Awards will be presented by the Vice-Chancellor at a special event, normally held biennially in June/July, arranged by the Research Office. E L IGIB I L IT Y All current research active staff are eligible for nomination but previous recipients are not eligible for recognition again in the same category. P RO C E DURES F O R SE E K I N G N OM I N AT I ON S A ND S E L E CT I NG R E CI P I E NT S The process for seeking nominations will be managed by the Research Office as follows: 1. Nominations will be sought biennially from University of Waikato staff. They will normally open in March with a deadline of the first Friday in May. 2. A nomination may be made by an academic staff member who can make informed comment on the nominee’s contribution and suitability for an award. Nominations for younger and emerging researchers are particularly encouraged. While staff may not self-nominate, they must agree to provide the information required on the nomination form taken from their Academic Staff Portfolio and other aspects of their research work. Nominations must be supported by the relevant Dean. Nomination forms may be found online at www.waikato.ac.nz/research/ro/uow_staff/Research_Excellence_Awards 3. Nominations will be considered by a small selection panel comprised of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research and two staff appointed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. 4. Recipients for each award category will be recommended to the Vice-Chancellor for approval. The Vice-Chancellor reserves the right to not make an award in any category in any given year. AWARD C RI T E RI A Selection criteria for each category of award may be found on the appropriate nomination form under the heading Basis for Nomination. The nominator must provide a statement of support and reflection on the nominee’s suitability for an award which addresses the criteria listed on the relevant nomination form in no more than 1000 words.
