INTRODUCTION
Dear Students,
You are doing this course for Optional English as distant learners. The same text
book is prescribed for the regular students also. But, your course book is organized
differently to help you study it on your own.
We hope that this book containing the Self-Instructional Material on Paper-I,
'Introduction to English Literature: the Short Story and the Novel' will meet the needs
of the students offering English as their optional subject at B. A. Part-I. The material
is designed and presented in such a way that it will encourage the students to read and
enjoy the units independently. The authors have tried their best to present relevant
material in a simple manner, expressed in a lucid, clear and easy, but dignified
language.
The first section of this course book deals with the Short Stories. Five Short Stories
are prescribed for this course.
Each story is divided into parts. And at the end of each part, there are small tasks.
You should try to write answers on your own. At the end of the unit, model answers are
given. But do not look at them until you have written your own answers. You should
correct your spellings and grammar and take care that such mistakes will not occur
again.
The Second Section, deals with the Novel. This section is divided into 4 parts. You
should read each part, answer the questions given in the tasks, check your answers,
and then go ahead. If you do this sincerely and honestly, you will enjoy bright success.
And not only this, your English will be greatly improved, adding to the development of
your personality.
There is a summary given at the end of each unit. It tells you what you have learnt
from the unit. It will help you to revise the lesson quickly at the time of examination.
We wish you great success and hope you will enjoy studying this course.
