Tips from Career Services:
Quick Guide to Networking
INTRODUCTION
Networking is an integral part of any job search, but it’s also something to build and grow
throughout your academic and professional life, not just during times of change. Some tips on
building a network of your own:
• Join at least one professional or student organization and become an active member
or leader
• Join LinkedIn! (www.LinkedIn.com)
• Attend conferences and events on campus and keep in touch with attendees and
speakers
• Join traditional professional groups such as community and business groups
• Periodically send or email articles of interest to your contacts with a short note
• Invite your contacts to attend professional meetings, programs and speeches
• Stay in touch with former co-workers and supervisors
• Introduce your contacts to each other and let them know you are interested in
meeting others in your field
• Follow-up appropriately and express appreciation
