4. Sound Recordings

Access Policy and Use Application
Sound Recordings Access Policy
The Center for the History of Psychology (CHP) houses 4,000 reel-to-reel tapes, cassettes, wire recordings, CDs,
and other formats dating from approximately 1919 to the present. The Sound Recordings Collection includes
radio broadcasts given by psychologists, instructional recordings, oral histories, conference presentations, and
training materials.
On-site access
Sound recordings are available for on-site listening. Research appointments must be made at least two weeks in
advance. In accordance with archival standards and best practice, CHP does not provide patrons with access to
original sound recordings. Instead, digital access copies are created if possible.
Off-site access
Sound recordings are available for off-site listening. The CHP will provide patrons with a link to the requested
material. The link will be active for seven days. Occasionally, the request for materials or research assistance is
too large for CHP staff to manage. In such cases, researchers are advised to conduct research on-site or hire a
third party researcher.
Access copies
The condition and copyright status of the material will determine if an access copy can be made. If an access
copy cannot be made on-site due to condition, researchers can opt to pay for off-site professional digitization.
CHP retains all copies of the original recording in its collection and researchers are not permitted to duplicate
audio content via camcorders or other recording devices.
In order to use materials from CHP’s Sound Recordings Collection, patrons must complete the Application to Use
Sound Recordings, read and agree to the Terms and Conditions, and pay all required fees.
