NEWSLETTER FOR BOORANGA WRITERS’ CENTRE OF
WAGGA WAGGA WRITERS WRITERS INC.
MAY - JUNE 2012
EDITOR: DEREK MOTION
Submissions open: fourW twenty-three
The next Booranga event you need to mark on your calendar is the closing date for fourW twenty-three submissions: June 30th.
Each year we publish the best poetry and fiction from across the region and across Australia, and each year the public perception of
fourW as a quality literary journal continues to grow. In 2012 fourW will be launched in Wagga and Melbourne by noted
poet Les Murray.
A summary of the fourW guidelines and launch dates is below.
* We welcome contributions of original poetry, fiction and graphics/artwork, not previously published.
* The Booranga Prize has been donated by Charles Sturt University, beginning in 2005. $250.00 will be awarded to works selected
as the best poem and best short story in the anthology.
* Short story word limit is 2500 words.
* We ask that contributors restrict their submissions to 6 poems or 4 short stories.
* We prefer submissions to be forwarded in Microsoft Word format by e-mail rather than on hard paper copies.
* All submissions will be read by our editorial committee during July and all successful contributors contacted in August/September
for proofreading of their own work which will appear in the anthology. All other contributors will be advised of the outcome of the
committee’s decision in September. Launch of the anthology is in November of each year.
* No payment is made for publication - a free copy of the published anthology will be forwarded to all successful contributors.
* All rights remain with the author.
* Submissions of writing should be emailed (as a word document attachment) to [email protected]

Wagga Bus Shelter Poetry Tour
- Contributed by Booranga member and featured poet Claire Baker.
The final four poems selected to adorn bus shelters throughout the suburbs of Wagga Wagga were launched on Saturday 14th April,
but not in the usual read-and-applaud kind of way.
In a departure from the norm, enthusiastic supporters (small in number but BIG on enthusiasm) boarded a Busways’ coach at the
Victory Memorial Gardens for a tour of all eight bus shelters scattered around Central, Kooringal, Mount Austin, Turvey Park,
Glenfield Park and Estella. Derek Motion, Director of Booranga and one of the judges, made a short welcome/introductory speech,
and gave apologies for Vic McEwan’s unfortunate absence, and off we went.
At each shelter, we filed off the bus to be entertained by a reading each of the poems. Three of the writers were present on the day David Gilbey, Heather Shaw and myself – and provided insight into the background of their poems to the interested audience. When
necessary, volunteers generously agreed to read the poems whose writers were unable to attend. We all joined in the discussions
following each of
these readings, which proved both informative and expansive.
Even the remnants of graffiti on one shelter, and the vandalism of another (resulting in my poem being re-located for the day to
Glenfield Park), could not detract from the support and good humour of those attending this cultural expression.
Like over-aged school kids, we chatted and got to know each other – a sometimes forgotten bonus aspect of travelling on public
transport. Derek looked after us well, although he may have felt a little nervous at our straggling across the road from one bus shelter to another. Maybe a lollipop sign for the next trip?
The quality of the design and artwork of each of the posters was well received, and it was very pleasing to see how carefully the
designer evoked the poem that she was illustrating. The background colours were varied and also added to the atmosphere of the poems. Being a Council initiative, the branding (circles of earthy colours to represent the many different facets that make up Wagga)
was utilised on each of the poems in a complementary manner without taking the focus off the words of the poems.
Our tour terminated at Victory Memorial Gardens and we alighted after giving a rousing three cheers to the bus driver for showing
remarkable skill in not losing any of us and in ensuring we stopped at all the bus shelters.
In the Historic Council Chambers, we were revived by refreshments of wine, orange juice and water, and some platters of cheese,
fruit and biscuits – and the dearest little cupcakes you’ve ever seen.
It is great that the poems selected display such a variety of subject and writing styles, and indicate that Wagga Wagga offers many
different experiences to its residents. If you haven’t yet seen the poems up, keep your eyes open as you travel the streets of Wagga
Wagga. Maybe the tourist centre could provide a map of the locations of the bus shelters to visitors as a different means of experiencing the Wagga Wagga area.

Workshops, readings etc, etc...
Since the last edition of Booranga News we’ve been lucky enough to have a diverse range of performances and workshops here
in the region. Our first writer-in-residence for the year Jennifer Mills presented both a workshop and a reading at the City Library,
giving us a taste of her fionely wrought prose. Our second writer-in-residence Kit Kelen gave a performance, also at the library,
where he entertained a large crowd with not only poetry, but also some tunes on the ukulele, and a presentation of his paintings. In
between the visits of these writers we also had a visit from poet Carol Jenkins, and she read poetry for us at the Booranga AGM.
This month we return to our regular monthly writers’ meetings. You are all encouraged to bring along some recent work to share in
a friendly and constructive environment. This next meeting is set for:
Saturday 23rd June, 2pm, Booranga Writers’ Centre.
Coming up in the region...
2012 HSC Open Mike
Wagga English Teachers’ Association & Booranga Writers’ Centre invite Teachers and Students of Year 12 Extension, friends, fellow students (Year 11 hopefuls…) to an evening of literary performance.
English Extension II students from local high schools will have an opportunity to present a segment of their Major Work composition in a ‘performance context’ with an audience of friends, supporters and members of the public. This will be a splendid evening
of textual delights and imaginative entertainment. It should provide students with a useful editorial experience in that having to
present and try their work in an oral mode, they will come to see it in a new way, with other nuances and possibilities. Remember:
For an audience it’s a chance to hear the work of some of Australia’s writers of tomorrow – in the voices of today. Part of the ancient magical appeal of words is the voicing by the author so both performer and audience should enjoy the evening.
6.00pm – 9.00pm, Wednesday 13 June, 2012
The Riverine Club, Cnr Tarcutta and Sturt Streets, Wagga Wagga
Cost: $5.00 for all who attend.
Everybody Welcome!

That’s all. Turn up early on the night to register if you are entering.

Wagga band Utopia Broke to release debut album
Utopia Broke will launch their debut album Angles of Perception on Sunday 17 June, 3pm, at the Home Tavern
Hotel, 142 Fitzmaurice Street Wagga Wagga.
Utopia Broke will use the launch to raise funds for the valuable local mental health organisation Sunflower House and Sunflower
Family Services. Half of the proceeds of CD sales at the album launch will go to these services, and donations can be made directly
to a representative of Friends of Sunflower House at the event. Utopia Broke, comprised of Sean Reardon (guitar, vocals), Regotron (bass, backing vocals) and Michael Scutti (drums), have been playing the Riverina gig circuit for a number of years in various
bands, and have now put together a cracking album of original hard rock music. They will perform the album Angles of Perception
live in its entirety, with additional support from local bands New Found Boots and Tank.
Utopia Broke are proud to support Sunflower House and Sunflower Family Services during the launch of their debut album Angles
of Perception.
