JULY - AUGUST 2012 neWSletter of the EDITOR: DEREK MOTION fourW twenty-three The twenty-third annual edition of fourW is soon to be launched in Sydney, Wagga and Melbourne. In a matter of days recent writer-in-residence Fiona Wright will be launching the book for us in Sydney, and this year one of Australia’s most well known poets Les Murray will be in Wagga and Melbourne to handle the launching duties. This is what fourW editor and Booranga Presdient David Gilbey has to say about this volume of fourW: ‘fourW twenty-three brings together some of the best new writing from around Australia and overseas. The anthology links local, regional voices to more established and international writers. New work by recent writers-in-residence Jennifer Mills and Christopher ‘Kit’ Kelen, is included alongside internationals such as Jane Joritz-Nakagawa and Lance Nizami, plus well-known Australians Les Murray, Ivy Alvarez, Matt Hetherington and Brett Dionysius, as well as ‘regionals’ Derek Motion, Jane Downing and Claire Baker. A fine banquet of sinuous imaginative writing.’ Booranga would like to encouranga any or all of you to come along and help us celebrate at one of these launches: Sydney: Saturday 24th November, 3.30 for 4pm, Gleebooks Wagga Wagga: Saturday 1st December, 2 for 2.30pm, Wagga Wagga City Library Melbourne: Sunday 2nd December, 2 for 2.30pm, The Butterfly Club, Bank Street, South Melbourne * The Melbourne launch is being held at a small venue, and seats have been filled by contributors. Please do come along on the day if you are interested though, as some extra seating may become available. Andrew appeared at the Wagga Library August 14th, where he gave a talk on becoming a children’s writer. Andrew ebtertained all present with his anecdotes, and it was particularly interesting to learn of the connection Andrew has with CSU academic Mark MacLeod - Mark was Andrew’s first publisher, and indeed November 24th: fourW twenty-three, Sydney launch. 3pm, Gleebooks. encouraged him to start writing in the first place. December September was a busy month already too. On the 7th Booranga President David Gilbey and I travelled over to Albury for the Write Around the Murray Festival. We firstly attended the book launch event for Robyne Young’s The Only Constant, where we were part of a large and enthusiatic crowd. Later we both performed at the Poet’s Loft, and event that saw Booranga poets perform alongside special guests Andy Jackson and Emilie Zoey Baker, as well as local open mic performers. September 14th saw Booranga, the Wagga City Library and Word Travel partnering to present to Wagga Heat of the Australian National Poetry Slam. Once again it was 1st: fourW twenty-three, Wagga Launch. 2pm, Wagga City Library (launched by Les Murray). 2nd: fourW twenty-three, Melbourne launch. 2pm, The Butterfly Club (launched by Les Murray). 2013 a great night at The Home Hotel and we had an audience of around 80 watching. It was a competitive event as usual, but after tallying up the scores the two local representatives who went through to the state final were Zohab Khan and Jo Wison-Ridley March (pictured on the next page with Booranga and Library staff). 11th - 23rd: Writer-in-residence, Josephine Rowe. Furthermore, at the time of writing this I have just been informed that Wagga win- June ner Zohab Khan has in fact taken out first place in the NSW state final as well. This means that for the second year running Zohab will battle it out with the best spoken word artists in the country at the National Poetry Slam Final! This event will take place on Saturday 2nd December and we’re all wishing him the best of luck. Writer-in-residence, Keri Glastonbury July 2013 ASAL conference to be held in Wagga Wagga. 2 BOORANGA NEWS JULY - AUGUST 2007 EDITOR: DEREK MOTION JULY - AUGUST 2012 And most recently we played host to our final writer-in-residence for the year, the aptly named Fiona Wright. Fiona took out the Mary Gilmore award for poetry in 2012 (an award for the best first collection in the preceeding two years) and she treated us to readings from this collection, as well as other newer pieces. I always find it particularly rewarding when a writer gets a lot out of coming to stay at Booranga. Our aim of our writer-inresidence program is twofold: we want writers to come here and share their skills and experience with local writers; but we also want to offer Australian writers a work opportunity, a chance to take time out of their normal schedule, to be paid to work on their new projects, and to promtoe their work to a new audience. Fiona got a lot of writing done while in the Booranga flat and really appreciated the opportunity to be here. If you can make it to the Sydney launch of fourW you will be able to catch up with her again. *** BTW, did you notice our new Booranga logo? It has been designed for us by Monica Higgins of Green Peas for Breakfast. In the coming weeks we will be implementsing across all of our print and online presences. 3 BOORANGA NEWS JULY - AUGUST 2012 Booranga Events Gallery Clockwise, from top-left: Andrew Daddo describes how he came to writing; Booranga has a new sign!; Jo Wilson-Ridley performing in the NSW State Final of the Aus Poetry Slam; Maurie Kramer performs in the Wagga Heat of the Australian National Poetry Slam. 4 BOORANGA NEWS JULY - AUGUST 2007 EDITOR: DEREK MOTION JULY - AUGUST 2012 Writer-in-residence, 2013 Booranga’s first visiting writer for 2013 will be Josephine Rowe. Finnaly for 2013 we will host noted novelist Margo Lanagan (October 2013). 5 BOORANGA NEWS JULY - AUGUST 2012 Booranga on the Web There are a number of ways to use the internet to keep us with the activities of the Booranga Writers’ Centre. But increasingly it seems that there is no one perfect method to guarantee you will get the information. Which do you prefer? Regularly checking the website for updates? Or waiting to receive an email bulletin... Or do you still prefer to receive the regular newsletter and print it out for comfortable reading? My advce is that the best option is to sign up to all of the updating services. Newsletter only come out bi-monthly, so they can’t keep you abreast of short notice opportunities. Email updates are more regular, btu for whatever reason the statistics show that only around half of our emails are opened by recepients. So please do take a moment to check that you have all the details correct: sign up for our email service, and then also like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter. Also check that your emails are getting through to the right address (and not filtered out as spam). This is important because the bi-monthly newsletter link will be sent out to this list.
