Publications—Former graduate student Diego Sustaita (MS 2006; Advisor,
Dr. Hertel) has a paper stemming from his MS thesis accepted in Journal of
Morphology entitled: “Musculoskeletal underpinnings to differences in
killing behavior between North American accipiters (Falconiformes:
Accipitridae) and falcons (Falconidae)” • Associate Professor Fritz Hertel
and Kenneth Campbell have a paper in press in The Auk entitled: “The
antitrochanter of birds: form and function in balance”
Graduate Student Awarded Grant—Graduate student Jarrod Peercy
(Advisor, Dr. Karels) received a $500 student research grant from the
Animal Behavior Society
Faculty Awarded Grant—Full-time Instructor Dr. Jeff Thomas and Assistant
Professor Cindy Malone were awarded a Judge Julian Beck Learning
Centered University Mini Grant for $5000 entitled: “Re-envisioning
Biology 100: a New Approach to Teaching Non-majors Biology”
Public Outreach—Collections Manager Dr. Jim Hogue gave a presentation
on “Production and Publication of Natural History Field Guides” to the
Lorquin Entomological Society in Los Angeles • Research Associate and
Instructor Dr. Janet Kübler gave a presentation on “Biomimicry” at the
Lifestyles on Health and Sustainability Conference in Marine del Rey
