What is the Online
Video Encoder?
The use of online video has been growing at a remarkable pace. Today’s learners count on video media to
be available as a supplement to traditional materials.
Instructors often require students to submit video of
presentations, student teaching or, as part of a project
or assignment.
The online video encoder is available for The University
of Akron faculty, staff and students. It allows the
most common types of video files under 250 MB to
be automatically encoded and streamed. The URL for
encoded videos can be added to Springboard courses,
submitted to the Springboard Dropbox and, added to a
dotCMS page.
Why Would You Use It?
◆◆ To improve the quality of online video.
◆◆ To avoid placing large media files into Springboard
or dotCMS.
◆◆ To increase the liklihood of smooth playback and a
good viewing experience for the learner.
◆◆ To make it easy to upload videos.
◆◆ To offer greater protection for the video file so that
modifying and redistribution is more difficult.

Online Video Encoder
How Do You Get Started?
1.Log into the Online Video Encoder with your UAnet
ID and password.
■■ http://www.uakron.edu/it/instructional_services/
dds/services/encoder.dot or,
■■ https://videoencoder.uakron.edu/encoder/
2.Browse for the video file you wish to encode and
accept the terms of use. The encoder will accept files
up to 250 MB in size. The server accepts most popular video formats, including:
■■ MPEG4
■■ h.264
■■ Quicktime MOV
■■ Windows Media
■■ AVI
3.Click on the Submit button.
4.The URL for the encoded video will be sent to you in
an email when it is finished encoding.
■■ Videos can be added as a lin or “Quicklink” to
Springboard courses.
■■ Videos can be embeded into Springboard content
using the provided embed code.
