2. Program Highlights
Dr. Manz informed the members of the success of the Accreditation Site Visit and that there
were two recommendations for the Program. He discussed the areas in which the improvement
would be made. He commented the CODA will be meeting in August to go over the response
and that he will be working on getting the report sent out in the next week or so.
Dr. Manz informed the advisory board members that the senior class will be having their pinning
ceremony on Friday May 7th, 2010 at 7p.m. over in the Henderson Fine Arts building. He
remarked that everyone is invited and welcome to come to his house after the pinning
ceremony for wine and cheese.
Dr. Manz discussed Mock Boards the students had on Friday March 12th and commented that
40% of the class failed. He added that this is very common to have this many students fail and
get them more prepared and ready for their real boards. In regards to testing Dr. Manz also
informed the group that 100% passed on their first go for their Anesthesia Boards. He also
informed the group that one senior student has taken the clinical and three will be taking it next
week.
Dr. Manz commented on a “bottleneck” issue with background checks and how PBIS is working
to remove it. He remarked that previously students had to have their diploma, but now it is a lot
easier. Dr. Manz commented that it was very usual for New Mexico to lose background check
results and now PBIS will provide additional copies for free if the State is unable to locate them.
Dr. Manz informed the group members that the Program has received 26 applications for the
upcoming year. He commented that last year we had received 28 and still would like to see
more applications come in. He added that he has heard that perhaps some of the reasons there
isn’t a larger pool of applicants is that there could be an impressions that the Dental Hygiene
Program is tougher to get into than Nursing. Dr. Manz commented that if anyone had any other
suggestions or ideas on marketing to let him know. Lisa also brought up that students applying
to the Dental Hygiene Program are required to have their prerequisites and general education
1
courses completed unlike Nursing and that could also be another reason why Nursing has a
higher applicant pool.
3. Future
Dr. Manz informed the group that he isn’t certain about the budget and there will continue to
be cuts and that no improvements seem to be apparent. In regards to the discussion of budgets,
Oliver brought up that Health Sciences is hiring new employees, 5 temps, of 1 administrative
assistant and 4 instructors.
Dr. Manz also commented that the Program gets a lot of requests for CE Courses and remarked
that it isn’t so easy to do. He remarked about looking at a sequence and possibly sticking to a
schedule, but that he needs feedback from the community. Oliver also invited community
members to utilize the stimulation center if need be for CPR, etc. Dr. Schumacher commented
that usually his employees require recertification annually or every 2 years. Dr. Manz also added
that the Dental Hygiene Department provided an annual CPR training each fall with about 60
attendees. Oliver also added that if groups of 24 individuals needed training that this would also
be a possibility. Tammy brought up a discussion in regards to having the students practice
simulating emergency situations. Dr. Manz added that Sherry and he are working on changing
the Program curriculum by including an Emergency in the Dental Clinic Course which hopefully
will give the student the chance to utilize the simulation center. He added that currently the
Dental Hygiene students don’t meet the maximum amount of credits required to be considered
a full time student and be able to qualify for financial aid. Dr. Manz remarked that if this course
goes through it will include the additional credit needed to eliminate this issue. He added that
all that is needed is the course has to go through the curriculum committee for approval and he
doesn’t see any issues with that at hand.
Sherry inquired to Dr. Schumacher if he knew about a breakout sessions for the ADA auxiliary
and he said that he did. He then commented about a DANB course and CPR course that is put on
every year by ADA. Sherry added that she has thought on the idea of doing some classes and
recruitment during the breakout session. She inquired who should be contacted, but
commented that it would be really tough to do it this year. Dr. Schumacher informed her that it
takes place the 2nd weekend in June.
Dr. Manz brought up internet and how the Dental Hygiene website can show up as number 1 if
individual google it. Dr. Schumacher inquired if the Program had its own website and Dr. Manz
replied no, that it is embedded in the San Juan College website. Dr. Manz commented that
eventually each department will be able to have the ability to update and make changes on their
own versus relying on OTS to make the changes for them such as posting available positions and
links to other dental related businesses or organizations. Oliver added that he felt a lot of
individuals in the community aren’t really aware that there are health programs offered at SJC.
Dr. Manz commented that he had went across campus to see about having the Programs
brochure placed where students can see it and had a difficult time having it done.

Dr. Schumacher informed the group in October there will be Mission of Mercy which will be held
on a Friday and Saturday. He added that most of Albuquerque supports this event, which also
includes parking. Dr. Schumacher remarked that the information on the patients will be
gathered electronically so it will be easier to pull up numbers and find out how much money has
been spent on the event.
Linda Parks informed the group that she has some suggestions for the Program members in
regards to the response to CODA and Dr. Manz commented that he would love to hear what she
has to say once the meeting is completed.
Back to the discussion of marketing, Lisa brought up the idea of having the Program advertised
at the theatres and concentrate on high schools. Sherilyn commented she thinks it would be
good to do more promoting with the high school students also.
