2. Program Highlights
Dr. Manz started off the meeting by informing the Advisory Board members
that Sherilyn is stepping down from her position and has been offered a
position from another company. Ron asked how long she has been with dental
and she replied five and a half years. Dr. Manz commended Sherilyn on her
tenure with the Program and wished her the best in her new career. He also
commented that if anyone knows of someone interested in this position to let
him know. He also remarked that SJC should be posting the position in the
paper on Sunday.
Dr. Manz informed the members that the senior class is getting close to
graduation and that they are having their Pinning Ceremony on Friday May
11th, at 6:30 p.m. in the ZIA conference room. He inquired to Tyler if the
invitations had been sent out and he replied that they had. Dr. Manz also

commented that ten out of eleven students have taken their clinical boards
and that right now there is an eighty percent pass rate, and that a couple
more students need to take this board. Dr. Manz also remarked that the
senior class will also be taking their National Boards, but none have taken it
yet.
Dr. Manz informed the committee members that eighteen applications have
been submitted for this year’s Program and commented that this is a pretty

Advisory Board
low number and that more marketing needs to be done. Dr. Hilton inquired if
the Program was going to extend the deadline this year and Dr. Manz replied
not this year, but it may be a possibility in the future if the numbers are this
low. He remarked that more marketing need to be done outside of this area.
He brought up a discussion in regards to a lottery program and how SJC can
benefits students because of its low tuition rates. Dr. Schumacher inquired if
the college is considering housing for students and Dr. Manz replied not now,
but possibly in the future. The college has been discussing this for a while,
but no major decisions have been made. He also commented that the type of
housing the college was considering or discussing was for a single person, and
that may not be as beneficial being that many students are coming into the
Program have families and children. Dr. Manz remarked that it isn’t easy to
find housing in this area some students have had to live in trailers, for
example.
Dr. Manz informed the group that Tammy is finishing and touching up the
finals pieces to her thesis and will soon be completed with her Masters. He
also informed the group that Sherry is also working on her Masters. He also
commented that some of the adjunct instructors are being strongly
encouraged to finish up their Bachelor’s degree. Dr. Johnson inquired where
are they going to finish up their Bachelor’s and Dr. Manz replied that some
go through UNM.
Dr. Manz thanked Dr. Hilton for a good Give Kids A Smile event and
commented on how successful it was this year. He also commented that it
was a really good experience for everyone and a great opportunity for the
community to integrate.
Dr. Manz informed the community members of the trip to M.O.M. this year in
Las Cruces, NM and how he felt it went well. He also commented to the
group that next year M.O.M. will be held in Farmington.
Dr. Manz informed the group that each year the students pick a community
project to complete over the holiday season. He asked to Tyler to elaborate.
Tyler commented to the group that the students had a project to work with
the women’s shelter. He explained that the students had distributed boxes to
dental offices throughout the community so that collections could be made for
donations. He remarked that the dental community donated personal care
items, baby food, etc., as well as cash donations. Tyler informed the Advisory

Advisory Board
Board members that this was a more involved project but that they had a
phenomenal response and had multiple boxes full of supplies for the shelter.
Dr. Manz added that the students have been involved in various volunteer
events and projects and remarked that the Program cannot take money but
that it has to go directly to the organizations. Tyler remarked that this
project had received three to four hundred dollars in checks.
Dr. Manz informed the group that Dr. Miller is helping out the Program this
year by teaching Pathology and also by assisting in clinic for a half a day. He
also commented that the department has an annual team building session
and this year he asked Dr. Miller if he would assist by teaching faculty
firearms safety. Dr. Manz commented that Dr. Black is also teaching this
year in clinic. He also informed the Advisory Board Members that Dr. Black
has agreed to teach Pharmacology in the Fall and will be replacing Jeff
Nygren.
Dr. Manz informed the Advisory Board members that SJC has chosen its new
President. Josalyn commented that she heard she was a graduate from Aztec
high school and one other member added that she is. Linda commented that
San Jacinto College in Huston has a very good reputation.
Linda inquired if the students would be having their garage sale and Dr.
Manz replied that they would. It is scheduled on Friday May 25th. Dr. Manz
added that if anyone had items they would like to donate to give him a call or
take them to the clinic.
Dr. Manz inquired to Tyler if he had anything he would like to add. Tyler
commented that he is really looking forward to helping out with M.O.M. in
Farmington next year and that if anyone needs his help, he is excited to help
out. Becky commented that those individuals interested in getting involved in
their community should look into joining NMDHA and Tres Rios. Kaycie
spoke on behalf of the junior class and how different this semester is
compared to fall.
Dr. Johnson inquired if there had been any equipment upgrades in the clinic
or if they had plans to do any upgrading. Dr. Manz replied that he felt the
clinic equipment was in good shape and doesn’t have any immediate plans to
do any upgrading. He added that a couple years back the clinic got a brand
new digital radiography system installed. Dr. Manz commented that the
3
Advisory Board
units are ten years old now, but according to ADEC the clinic has state of the
art equipment and he has no plans to replace anything. He also added the
importance of making sure the students don’t train on out of date equipment
and how there are new super turbo boost cavitrons. Tyler added that there is
a new floor in the clinic as well. Dr. Manz also remarked that new safety
equipment has been installed in the laboratory. Linda added that for
accreditation purposes he may want to consider upgrading equipment. He
remarked that there is a plan, but for now he feels this clinic is in good shape.
Dr. Schumacher inquired about film, and if the students are taught how to
process it. Dr. Manz replied that they do learn how to process film, and are
taught three methodologies. Dr. Manz then inquired if any of the members
had some input on that or if they felt other methodologies should be taught.
Dr. Hilton agreed the students should be taught how to process film. Dr.
Schumacher offered to have students come to his office for experience with
cone-beam x-rays. Dr. Johnson then commented that he told Scott Weed in
Durango to give Dr. Manz a call.
Becky inquired if the Program would be considering changing over to digital
records and Dr. Manz replies yes, eventually. He commented that there is the
equipment to do the digital recording, but he added that there is not material
for training or teaching students how to do it. Dr. Manz remarked that
turning things digital is a really big deal and that the Program would like to
get the students to have their portfolios turn digital as well. He also added
that although this is the next project it will also be very time consuming and
involved a very thorough process, turning forms electronic and that it is a
little overwhelming on how it will get done.
Dr. Johnson inquired what is the academic debt differential between students
who go to SJC and those that attend other colleges or universities. Dr. Manz
replied that is a good question but that he doesn’t have the figures. Tyler
added that it is about eighteen to twenty thousand for an SJC student to go
through the dental program. Ron then inquired if he was renting and Tyler
commented that he and his wife purchased a house but that other classmates
are renting property, but a majority of his classmates are local. Becky added
that there is one student that lived in Alaska but is from this area. Dr. Manz
informed the group that SJC is the third least expensive college, nationally,
at forty seven dollars a credit for tuition. Josalyn made a comment about how
good it would be to advertise how cheap SJC that individuals may think the
education isn’t so good. Dr. Manz added that it is difficult to market, that
4
Advisory Board
there is a good program, yet the tuition is low. He added that he would
eventually like to incorporate YouTube and other social medias to promote
and market the program more, but a lot is word of mouth. Becky added that
it cost a lot more to go to Albuquerque and Kaycie added that the students
have to take the prerequisite courses on top of their regular courses. Sherilyn
added that she heard that PIMA had bought out and changed its name to
Carrington college, but wasn’t one hundred percent sure. Dr. Manz remarked
that if anyone had any ideas on marketing to let the Program members know.
Josalyn inquired if the Program was utilizing any social media services and
Dr. Manz replied yes, Facebook but more work needs to be put into it and
that he wants to start using YouTube. Dr. Hilton inquired if the program has
an actual Google page and Dr. Manz replied that it does.
Linda then inquired if the area will become saturated with dental hygienists
and Dr. Manz replied it already has and is. Becky then inquired about
collaborative practice and Dr. Manz replied that was hard to predict and
wasn’t sure on the economics behind that. Dr. Schumacher added that it
hasn’t been very economical. Becky also brought up a discussion in regards to
laser whitening and how some people have been going to Mexico to have it
done. Dr. Schumacher commented that the idea is to get hygienists into rural
areas for dental triage, but that it hasn’t gone anywhere.
Dr. Schumacher added since the topic of the Board came up, he wanted to
inform the group that Friday April 20th, there will be a meeting. He remarked
that the first hour will be the hygiene committee and then following that
there will be a full board meeting. Dr. Schumacher informed the group that
the meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. and will be held at the City Council Chambers
and anyone is welcome to attend.
Dr. Manz informed the group that the CDHC is still up in the air, but that he
would like to establish training programs, but that it cost money. He added
that if anyone is interested in donating it will cost an estimated one hundred
thousand a year. He added that this program would require faculty to work
on weekends and that also a curriculum will need to be developed.
Becky inquired if the Program was marketing to veterans. Dr. Manz replied
no, not specifically but SJC is improving its marketing overall. She went on
to explain how it is hard for some veterans to find work and that they have
military funding and could be a really good opportunity.

Pharmacology and is also teaching in the clinic.
 Facilities
o Dr. Manz highlighted the programs new set of LED lights in the
clinic. They have less fatigue associated with them, give off no
heat, and are energy efficient. The dental clinic upgraded to a
new Digital Panoramic Radiology unit. The program strives to
maintain working units by keeping them updated.
o Dr. Manz though it would be a good idea for the next Advisory
Meeting to be at the dental clinic. He proposed it to the
members, everyone was in agreement. The Spring 2013

o Dr. Manz stated that the Dental Program has expanded the
Honors Program to all students. They each have an opportunity
to take an Honors Course. This year there are seven students
enrolled. Dr. Manz asked Tammy to explain the advantages and
requirements of taking an Honors Course. Tammy informed the
members that each student is required to do extra projects in
class. When the students graduate, they will graduate “with
honors”. They get to put that on their graduation application
and be recognized by wearing a different color sash at
graduation. Linda asked what kind of projects. Tammy
explained some of the projects for each honors course. For
example in Pharmacology the students are required to make a
flip/reference chart of the top twenty frequent drugs and how it
effects oral health. Dr. Manz commented that next year the
Camp Scrubs will be taught by the Senior Students. This is
where local students, interested in dental come in and learn
about the dental field.
o Tammy stated, every year the Senior Students design a project
for San Juan County in their Public Health class. This year, the
students are implementing the project. It is an Oral Health
Exhibit at the Children’s Museum, here in Farmington. Tammy
and the students have been working extremely hard, meeting
with numerous people, and discussing ways to make this
happen. The grant has been turned in and is being reviewed.
Tammy should get notice of the decision made, sometime in
December. Desert Hills donated a dental chair and NW District
Dental Society donated money to purchase the patient for the
dental chair. Dr. Manz said when this project is complete there
will be a ribbon cutting ceremony.
National Boards
o All 2012 students have taken and passed the National Board
Dental Hygiene Examination. Once the reports are in, Dr. Manz
will inform the members. Dr. Manz said, in years past we have
been above the standard mean.
WREB Local Anesthesia Boards
o All 2012 students have taken and passed the WREB Local
Anesthesia Boards.



o All 2012 students have taken and passed the WREB Clinical
Boards. Sherry asked if New Mexico accepted National Exams
for Licensure. Dr. Manz replied, yes. Tammy has applied to be
an examiner for the WREB Clinical Boards. Sherry informed
the members that PIMA applied to have the exam there. An
advantage of this would be more dates available to take the
exam and less travel from our students.
Graduates
o Dr. Manz reported the Dental Program graduated eleven
students in May 2012. This year, ten students are on their way
to graduate in May 2013.
Licensure (2009)
o Ten out of eleven students from the class of 2012 have become
licensed as Registered Dental Hygienist. Linda asked how
many of these students were employed. Tammy stated ten
students are employed. One is not, because she hasn’t applied
for her license yet.
Applications
o The Program has accepted twelve new students for the Class of
2014. There were 25 qualified applicants.
o Dr. Manz would like to improve our marketing. He thought
about a Google ad. Dr. Manz has been in contact with Google
and explained how Google ads work. The key words “Dental
Hygiene” is $8.00 per word. Right now the program is not able
to afford that. Another thought Dr. Manz had, was making a
YouTube video. Today, young people don’t use Google as much.
They search YouTube. This is an area Dr. Manz wants to
pursue.
o Dr. Hilton contacted a number of schools in Utah and asked if
they would be interested in receiving information about our
Program. Many brochures were mailed to each school. Dr.
Manz stated the Utah schools were very excited to receive them.
