Program Highlights
 San Juan County MOM 2013

here in San Juan County. Next year’s event will be in Rio Rancho, scheduled
for October 23rd - 26th.
 Class of 2014
o Dr. Manz stated that the Student Table Clinics went good, Thursday evening.
There was a great turn out from the Dental Community. Becky agreed and
said the timing was good, with the Hygienist Meeting and the NWDDS
Meeting the same evening.
 Class of 2015
o The junior class has 11 students and they are off to a great start.
 2014 Applications
o The 2014 applications are ready. Dr. Manz stated there were about 24
applicants last year. Dr. Manz mentioned our YouTube video and Facebook
page, he would like to do more marketing. Dr. Schumacher asked if it was
regional applicants. Dr. Manz answered yes. Becky asked if housing would
help. Dr. Manz wasn’t sure, the college would need to look into family units
to make it available to outside state applicants.

2013 New Dental Hygiene Program Equipment
o Dr. Manz highlighted the new equipment we have in the clinic. The PANO
machine was put in about 6 months ago. The Adec Halogen Unit Lights and
Light Poles were just recently installed. The clinic received a Picasso Diode
Laser. Dr. Manz and Dr. Schumacher have been discussing adding a class for
students to be certified. The clinic has a Digdoc Intraoral Camera-IRIS. The
program received 5 microscopes (3 are Olympus America Lab Microscopes), a
55” HDTV, and a Lumenera Infinity HD Color Camera for Microscopes. The
microscopes, TV, and camera will be used for Histology, instead of having to
walk across to the Health Sciences Building. Dr. Manz believes it will be
more effective while teaching in the classroom. The clinic also received an
Air Techniques X-Ray Processor and new computers in each Operatory.
Full Time Faculty
o Dr. Manz informed the members that Tammy has accepted a position at Ohio
State University. The program is in search of a new Second Year
Coordinator. Dr. Manz is working on the paperwork HR needs for this
position and hopefully the job opening will be posted soon. Tammy
mentioned her last day will be December 3rd, but will be working remotely
until the end of January.
Miscellaneous
o Dr. Manz stated that San Juan College is the 2nd least expensive program
according to ADEA.
o Becky stated that the Air Force sends interested personnel to two schools,
one in Georgia and one in Florida to further their hygiene education. She
asked why not send them here? Dr. Manz and the members of the board
thought this was a great idea. Becky is going to get more information to Dr.
Manz and he will see if maybe a contract or something could be worked out
between the SJC Dental Hygiene Program and the Air Force.
o Dr. Manz mentioned that the employment is pretty good for graduated
classes. There are a couple without jobs, but a majority have at least a parttime job. Farmington, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque are
becoming saturated. The key for employment would be for students to move
out of state.
Future
o Again, Dr. Manz mentioned that he and Dr. Schumacher have been
discussing the idea of adding a class for students to become certified Laser
users.
Conclusion
o Dr. Manz concluded the meeting by again thanking everyone for attending
and expressing how much he appreciates the community support.
