Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Friday, November 14, 2014 9:00am-10:26am Attendees: Becky Miller, Dr. Charles Schumacher, Dr. Gene Hilton, Dr. Ron Johnson, Linda Parks, Michelle Tensay, Patricia Dixon, Sylvia Ortega, Dr. Julius Manz, Sherry Paxson, Elizabeth Onik, Ruby Woodard, Dr. Barbara Ake, & Sherri Gaugh I. II. Introductions Dr. Manz started off the meeting by welcoming the Advisory Board Members and thanking them for attending today’s meeting. The Advisory Board Members introduced themselves. Dr. Barbara Ake, Vice President of Learning and Sherri Gaugh, Registrar joined us for our meeting and introduced themselves. Common Core Presentation Dr. Barbara Ake and Sherri Gaugh presented about the Health Sciences Core Curriculum. They are on the Health Professions Pathways (H2P) committee with Cydney Farrar and Kay Peters. The purpose of this is to provide information and an opportunity to dialog about the H2P initiative, the Health Sciences Core Curriculum, and creating more healthcare related options for San Juan College (SJC) students. Dr. Ake and Sherri shared that 14 states (69 schools) are using the Common Core Curriculum. There are a few colleges in New Mexico that are interested as well; Santa Fe Community College, Northern New Mexico College, and Eastern New Mexico University. The mentor of SJC is El Centro College in Dallas, TX. There are other programs on campus that are open and interested in this curriculum. Dr. Schumacher asked how many credits is an Associate Degree right now. Right now our students graduate with an Associate Degree of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene with 95 total credit hours. With the Common Core Curriculum, students could graduate with an Associate Degree with 60-65 credit hours. Dr. Manz mentioned that our prerequisite courses are dictated by Accreditation. Linda reinforced what Dr. Manz said that the Dental Hygiene Program has to have the Accreditation requirements. Dr. Ake and Sherri said that there is an employment shortage for Health Care providers and this common core curriculum would allow students to get an entry data position. Sherry asked the Dentists on the Advisory Board working in a private practice if they would hire a Dental Assistant with these skills. They said yes, they would like to hire someone with computer skills and basic medical terminology. This subject was discussed and 1 III. Dr. Manz said if there is any feedback that anyone has, to please email him and he will forward to Dr. Ake. Dr. Ake and Sherri thanked the group for their time. Program Highlights Second Year Coordinator o Dr. Manz introduced Elizabeth (Betty) Onik, our Second Year Coordinator. Mission of Mercy 2014 o Dr. Manz stated that Mission of Mercy was in Rio Rancho this year and was a great turn out. Both classes attended the event. Class of 2015 o Betty said that she enjoyed working with the Class of 2015 on their presentations for Table Clinics and feels the students were confident. The “Best Overall” was awarded to Eulanda and Kaitlin, Tracking Periodontitis in Diabetics. The “People’s Choice” was awarded to Rachel and Kelly, Electron Cigarettes. The “Best Researched” was awarded to Celes and Shelby, Halitosis. A former student told Betty that she applied for a job and got it, and the employer remembered her from Table Clinics. Betty appreciates the community support. Class of 2016 o Dr. Manz informed the Advisory Board that the Class of 2016 has lost a student, she withdrew from the Program. Sylvia, the Junior DHYG Student mentioned that she is excited to be in the Program and appreciates the help from the senior class. They set a good example. New Adjuncts o Dr. Manz updated the members of the new adjunct. Nicole Lehar, RDH is helping Sherry in Pre-Clinic for the fall semester and will be in clinic during the spring semester. Future o Dr. Manz brought up the topic of a parallel program where students could graduate with an Associates and an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certificate. The members discussed this topic and nothing was decided at this time. o Dr. Manz shared some information about the UNM BS Completion Collaboration. Students could simultaneously take SJC courses and UNM courses to graduate with an Associates and a UNM Bachelor degree. This is something the Program might be interested in doing. o Dr. Manz mentioned that the Program is looking into having interviews be part of the application process. He ask the advisory board if any of them would be interested in being on the panel if this were to be implemented. A few of the dentists said yes, they would be interested. Miscellaneous o Sherry asked the members how they felt about having an Online Radiology Course verses a student completing the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) online. The Radiology Course would be 8 weeks and conventional 2 and digital film would be taught. Members thought the Radiology Course was a great idea. One mentioned that having the course at the same time every year or every two years would be beneficial, that way people knew when it was going to be offered. Sherry will look more into this course. o Students are coming in for advising to get ready to apply for next year. The applications are ready. They can be picked up or printed out online on our website. o Job placement is good. Last year’s class has been looking for jobs, a few of them have had to temp and then get offered a full time position. o Dr. Manz informed the members that the Dean of Health Sciences has retired and the position has been opened. San Juan College is hoping to have someone hired by the spring semester. Conclusion o Dr. Manz concluded the meeting by again thanking everyone for attending and expressed how much he appreciates the support of the community and the college. 3 Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Friday, April 18, 2014 9:20am-10:20am Attendees: Ruby Woodard, Dr. Ron Johnson, Kallie McLaughlin, Patricia Dixon, Michelle Tensay, Dr. Julius Manz, & Sherry Paxson I. II. Introductions Dr. Manz started off the meeting by welcoming the Advisory Board Members and thanking them for attending today’s meeting. The Advisory Board Members introduced themselves. Michelle has been promoted to an Administrator 3 position and will be training a new Head Start Coordinator. Program Highlights Second Year Coordinator o Dr. Manz informed the members that a new Second Year Coordinator has been selected. Her name is Elizabeth Onik from Pennsylvania. She has over 30 years’ experience and will start in July. Class of 2014 o Dr. Manz stated that the Pinning Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 9th at 3:00pm in the Zia. Then, Graduation is on Saturday, May 10 th @ 8:00am in the Commons Area. Class of 2016 o The Class of 2016 has been selected. Dr. Manz said it is a local class this year. There are two applicants from Albuquerque, two from Bayfield, three from Farmington, one from Grants, one from Durango, two from Bloomfield, and one from Aztec. Letters will go out today. New Adjuncts o Dr. Manz updated the members of the new adjuncts. Krysta Caudill, RDH is teaching in the clinic and the NBDHE Review class. She will be teaching Tooth Morphology in the fall. Erin Elledge, RDH is alumni and is teaching in the clinic. Dr. Southwell is teaching in the clinic and will be teaching Pharmacology in the fall. Carrie Maloy is teaching in the clinic when needed and has been an examiner for Clinical Mock Boards. 1 New Dental Hygiene Program Equipment o Dr. Manz highlighted the new equipment we have in the clinic. The Schick 33 Intraoral is currently the highest image resolution available. It is out to bid right now. The new Iris Intraoral camera is working great. Sherry suggested making the camera accessible, so it gets utilized more. o Sherry and Dr. Manz will be attending the Laser Training to establish laser curriculum and certification. Dr. Manz and Dr. Schumacher have been working on setting up a laser certification class for the students. Sherry suggested having a laser certification CE for a SADHA fundraiser. Dr. Johnson mentioned they have four/five lasers at his office. He agreed that the laser certification would be great. Miscellaneous o Sherry will be graduating with her Masters of Arts in Education on May 10th. Everyone congratulated her! o Dr. Manz appreciated Sherry’s help with the second year students. Both Kallie and Patricia thanked Sherry and are very proud of her. Sherry gave recognition to the Class of 2014 for picking up the slack while the second year coordinator was not here. o Michelle mentioned that the Head Start Committee is looking for a Community Representative. They meet four times a year on Saturday’s at different locations, all expenses are paid. Dr. Manz said he will have Elizabeth contact her when she gets settled in here. Future o Next year’s Mission of Mercy is scheduled for October 23rd-26th in Rio Rancho, NM. Dr. Manz said we are the only Program that has participated in all New Mexico Mission of Mercy’s. Conclusion o Dr. Manz concluded the meeting by again thanking everyone for attending and expressed how much he appreciates the support of the community and the college. 2
